Ghana agrees to pay N33.8bn Gas debt owed Nigeria by Feb. 2016

The President of Ghana, John Mahama today reached an agreement with the 
government of Nigeria represented by NNPC GMD Ibe Kachiukwu, to pay off 
the N33.8 billion owed Nigeria from the gas supply provided by a 
Nigerian gas company, N-Gas, the main supplier of gas to Ghana’s Volta 
River Authority through the West African Gas Pipeline.<br />

 customers in Benin, Togo and Ghana. The N-Gas had recently threatened

26-year-old banker, Daniel Makanjuola, has been arrested by the Police 
in Lagos for using a forged West African Senior School Certificate and 
Lagos State University’s statement of result to get a job at Wema Bank 
Plc, Marina branch,Lagos Island.<br />

The police said Makanjuola pretended that he was a degree holder in 
marketing with Second Class, Upper Division, and had also provided a 
forged National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate and a 
reference letter to the bank before he gained employment. He claimed to 
have obtained the letter from United Bank for Africa, where he 
supposedly worked previously.<br />

According to <a href="http://punchng.com/" target="_blank">Punch</a>, 
Daniel who is from Ijero Local Government Area in Ekiti State, had 
joined the bank in 2013, before he was sacked in July 2015 after the 
documents were confirmed to be fake.</div>

It was gathered that the fraudulent act was discovered after WEMA Bank 
management had sent a verification letter UBA to to verify the 
authenticity of the reference letter. UBA was said to have denied any

After the discovery, the bank decided to write West African Examinations
 Council and LASU, to confirm the veracity of his documents but both

The boy, named only as Leon, was severely injured when he fell onto the 
tracks at the station in Hamburg, according to reports in Germany.<br />

The driver of the train was unable to stop in time and the youngster's leg was crushed under the wheels, Bild reported.<br />

Emergency services took almost 40 minutes to free the child, who remained conscious throughout his ordeal, the newspaper said.<br />
His mother, identified as Jana, is believed to have attempted to flee

But the 31-year-old was quickly apprehended by police, according to Bild.<br />
<br />
Young Leon was taken to hospital where he remains in a severe condition, Hamburg Police told Sky News.<br />

He is not thought to have suffered life threatening injuries.<br />

Local media in Germany reported that the boy's leg had to be amputated, although police refused to comment.<br />

30 Boko Haram insurgents killed in Adamawa

<strong></strong>No fewer than 30 members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect
 were killed in a gun duel with Nigerian troops assisted by the local 
vigilantes in the early hours of yesterday at the border villages 
between Adamawa and Borno states.<br />
This came as Boko Haram members on Sunday invaded Gwoza local 
government area of Borno State, killing nine people and destroying 
houses.<br />

On the Adamaa incident, Nigerian troops had laid an ambush on the 
insurgents between the border villages of Kirchinga and Imirsa, which 
had come under attacks of Boko Haram insurgents in recent times, leading
 to the death of innocent residents.<br />

A local vigilante operative who participated in the campaign, told 
Vanguard that following intelligence report about the movement of the 
Boko Haram insurgents, an ambush was laid for them which resulted in the
 killing of many of the insurgents.<br />

“Following information about the movements of the Boko Haram 
insurgents we got, we decided to lay an ambush in the wee hours of 
Monday.<br />

“Our efforts yielded results as we succeeded in killing over 30 of the insurgents after a fierce gun duel.<br />

“We confiscated many weapons from the invading terrorists, including 
AK 47 assault rifles, bows and arrows and other dangerous weapons,” the 
source said.<br />

The onslaught against the insurgents followed increased attacks on 
parts of Madagali local government area, leading to the death of three 
soldiers and abduction of one senior military officer alongside his 
operational vehicle.<br />

A vigilante operative had told Vanguard that Boko Haram insurgents 
had disguised as local vigilante operatives and in the process, killed 
unsuspecting residents and soldiers.<br />

“The insurgents who disguised as local vigilante mounted road blocks 
across the highway and pretended to be carrying out routine checks.<br />

“The soldiers were lured into the booby trap of the insurgents who 
immediately swooped on them and killed three soldiers and abducted one 
of the soldiers,” the source said.<br />

In a similar vein, reports from Kirchinga village in Madagali local 
government area of Adamawa State indicated that a fierce gun duel was 
taking place between Nigerian troops and Boko Haram insurgents who 
launched attack on the village weekend.<br />

Confirming the incident, member representing Madagali/Michika Federal
 constituency in the House of Representatives, Adamu Kamale, called on 
the federal government to deploy more troops to safeguard lives and 
properties.<br />

Meanwhile, suspected group of Boko Haram sect on Sunday invaded Gwoza
 Local Government Area of Borno State, killing nine persons and 
destroying houses.<br />

Sources said, however, that scores of the insurgents met their 
Waterloo as military operatives in Gwoza town repelled the attack much 
later.<br />

The terrorists, according to another source, also wounded many people
 after looting their foodstuff, including livestock, and fled without 
confrontation from the armless villagers.<br />

Sunday is a market day where a few persons from surrounding villages 
of Limankara and other communities patronize the town for businesses.<br />

Gwoza was declared as an Islamic Caliphate by the group’s leader, 
Abubakar Shekau last year when his fighters seized the town which is 
south and about 150kms drive from Maiduguri, the state capital.<br />

After the deadly attacks and taken over of Gwoza by the terrorists 
last year, including Limankara village, no fewer than 40 policemen 
undergoing training at the Limankara Mobile Training Camp were declared 
missing.<br />

A few of them were reported to have been located and rescued, with over 30 still missing at the time of this report.<br />

Reliable sources told Vanguard that with the liberation of Gwoza by 
military troops early this year, many fleeing residents returned to the 
town and other surrounding villages to pick up their pieces, before 
another group of terrorists launched fresh attacks on the town, killing 
nine and injuring scores.<br />

The source added that just last week, there was a failed attempt by 
insurgents on Gwoza town, but they were repelled by the military, living
 unspecified number of the terrorists dead and recovery of their arms 
and ammunition.<br />

On the recent attacks on Gwoza, another source who was on his way to 
Gwoza from Maiduguri at the time of the attack had to spend the night at
 Limankara, stating that he was compelled to do so because the military 
had blocked the only existing Madagali- Limankaa- Gwoza road.<br />

The source said he was on his way to Gwoza with a truck of cement and
 other building materials for sale, following relative peace witnessed 
recently in the town, but had no option than to spent the night at 
Limankara before moving back to Madagali town of Adamawa.<br />

All effort to get confirmation from the Police Commissioner, Mr. 
Aderemi Opadokun did not yield positive result as his phone lines were 
not reachable at press time.<br />

Boko Haram: Weather, logistics challenges threatening December deadline, Service Chiefs tell Buhari

The December deadline given to the Nigerian Army by president 
Mohammadu Buhari to completely rout out Boko Haram insurgents in the 
North east may not be feasible after all, as Service Chiefs on Monday 
told the president that their effort was being threatened by weather and
 logistics.
<br />
The Service Chiefs however did not specifically ask for extension of time.<br />

Speaking to State House Correspondents on behalf of the Chiefs after a
 Security meeting with president Buhari at the presidential villa in 
Abuja to brief him on the efforts of the military so far in the troubled
 north east, the Chief of Defense Staff, CDS, Abayomi Olonishakin and 
the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Alhaji Ismalia 
Aliyu, said the military was still on course despite the challenges.<br />

Olonishakin said: “It is a normal consultation to intimate him of the
 issues on ground we briefed him on the security situation on ground 
after a 60-day review and we had to brief him on the challenges we have 
and ensure that the mandate we have is properly delivered.<br />

“Of course, the challenges we are looking at are the issues of 
probably the weather as it were and some other logistics that we feel we
 should have so that the mandate can be quickly delivered. He is very 
excited, very happy. As for our request, he gave the mandate.<br />

Extension of the deadline?<br />

“We have not said that. The mandate is that we should clear Boko 
Haram from the occupied territories and ensure that we reclaim all the 
lost grounds. That is exactly what we are doing.<br />

Is the mandate feasible?<br />

“It is a military operation and military operations have time-lines and these time-lines, we are working on the assiduously”.<br />

The CDS also confirmed the contributions of the governments of both United States of America and the United kingdom.<br />

“When we get there, we will let you know. They have been involved in 
some capacity building and of course the tangible ones. But when we get 
there, we will let you know about it”.<br />

In the same vein, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence,
 Alhaji Aliyu also hinted that the presidential directive was for the 
military to stay on task even as he expressed confidence in the ability 
of the military to ensure that the mandate was realized.<br />

“We are here to brief the president on the situation of what armed 
forces have been doing in the north east and the south south. That is 
exactly what we discussed with Mr President.<br />

“The directive is that we should continue what we have been doing and
 in the next few days, there will be another meeting. But by and large 
the president is excited and confident that the leadership of the 
Nigerian armed forces that he puts in will do us proud”, he said.<br />

The meeting also had the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and 
the National Security Adviser, NSA, Babagana Monguno in attendance.<br />

Yes, we are. We’ve not done the job yet. She just did an audition and
 I was invited over to help in the casting. We did an audition at 
Excellence Hotel so I went there to help her cast and I’m part of the

<strong>Is it a porn movie?</strong><br />

God forbid. It’s an African movie. Afrocandy does other movies too. 
The one she’s going to do soon is an epic movie like a village kind of 
movie. Then the other one is another kind of movie, we call it Glamour.<br />

Glamour is the one you have many rich people but the epic is the 
village one. It’s not a porn movie, don’t mind what people are saying. I
 assure you it is not porn. Anita cannot do porn. You know why I can’t 
do porn? Because the money will finish but the movie won’t go.<br />

It’s not something I would like to do. Everybody in life has what he 
or she wants to do. I don’t care what anybody does. Some people say 
you’re friends with Afrocandy and all that, So What?<br />

Do you believe Nigerians are hypocritical about sex?</strong><br />

Oh yes they are, some of them do worse things behind closed doors. So
 don’t judge me. I do what I want to do but I can’t do porn. Anita is 
crazy, Anita is this, Anita is that, but I can’t do porn. There are some
 kinds of things I can’t do. If I’m doing business with Afrocandy, it’s 
movie business not porn and it’s my business. Nobody has the right to 
tell me I shouldn’t do it because she’s this, she’s that.   That’s their
 business.<br />

<strong>Can you do sex in a movie?</strong><br />
No, I can’t<br />

<strong>Not even kissing?</strong><br />

That’s a normal thing. There’s a way we do kissing in the movie 
industry, we don’t really do the real kissing but there’s a way we do 
it. It’s acting.<br />

<strong>There was a movie I saw you,where Nkem Owoh was touching your boobs, what movie was that?</strong><br />

That movie was The Gamblers. In the script, they said he was supposed
 to touch my breasts; we have to make it real so I gave him my breast to
 touch and that thing blew people’s minds. That was the whole idea, he 
touched it for real.<br />

<strong>Have you done any other stuff like that?</strong><br />

I do lots of stuffs like that. It doesn’t matter; it’s the kind of 
job I do, so it depends. It depends on what the script says, sometimes 
you just have to pretend to be there. Its pretense, Acting is all about

<strong>Which actor do you have chemistry working with?</strong><br />

I have chemistry working with everybody but there are some people you
 work better with, lots of them. If I start mentioning the names, you

<strong>What do you consider the sexiest part of your body?</strong><br />

Everywhere is sexy because everybody has what trips him or her. Some 
like the boobs, some like the back, some like my legs, I’ve seen 
somebody that loves my palm. My fingers are very sexy<br />

<strong>You say you love tattoos, how many tattoos do you have?</strong><br />

I used to love tattoos. But I don’t do tattoos anymore and I’m trying
 to remove them. I’m not a tattoo freak anymore; I’ve grown out of that.
 In fact the tattoos on my body are mistakes. I advise people not to do 
tattoos. Tattoos are addictive. If you do one you want to do another, at
 the end of the day you’ll start regretting them. I don’t love my 
tattoos anymore. I wish I can clean them out.<br />

<strong>Where is the most hidden place you’ve done a tattoo?</strong><br />

No hidden place, the most hidden one is the one on my waist and on my boobs<br />

<strong>What do you find attractive in a man?</strong><br />

I love men that are simple. I don’t like men that are too loud, I love it simple<br />

I started music professionally four years back but I’ve not released 
an album yet. I’ve not really been serious with my music because the 
movies took over but I’ve released two videos, Time No Dey and Nyem

Yes, I have, in South Africa. I did the movie last year but it’s not out yet<br />

They’re not easy to handle but I handle them well enough. In this 
kind of job, you have to be strong and bold because if you’re not, 
they’ll just mess you up. So, I handle them perfectly. I try not to be 
insulting in as much as some of them are very unbearable. Those that are
 unbearable, you just try and be subtle and manage them with a good 
smile.<br />

<strong>What of your critics?</strong><br />

I love my critics because if they don’t criticise me, I won’t get better<br />

<strong>Do you take to their advice?</strong><br />

I do listen but some of them don’t make sense. Some of them are beef,
 maybe it’s somebody that doesn’t like you, you didn’t do anything to 
the person but the person doesn’t just like you. They did it to Jesus 
Christ.<br />

He didn’t do anything to them but some people hated him, so it happens.<br />

Sometimes when you read some things you know that it’s just beef. You
 might not know the person but the person is beefing you.   I don’t care
 about what they say.   What I care about is I take from the ones that 
are good, I try to amend what is not right but the ones that I know that
 I’m doing right, I don’t bother<br />

<strong>What is the craziest thing a fan has ever done when he saw you?</strong><br />

Hitting my bum. Someone has seen me in Shoprite before, hit my bum 
and ran away. There was nothing I could do. There was a movie I did Open
 and Close. I was a nymphomaniac in that movie, I had sex with everybody
 around me because it was the story. The guy said that thing you did in 
Open and Close, can you just do it to me? He started whining in 
Shoprite, mimicking everything I did in the movie, the way I was doing. I
 just turned to leave and the next thing he did was to tap my ass. I 
wanted to pursue him but I wore heels so I couldn’t pursue him.<br />

If it were before, I would have chased him all the way. Another day 
someone called me and started moaning ‘Anita you’re killing me, Anita 
whine for me’, I said hello, he said ‘Oh please, it’s me please you 
don’t understand’. It was one of my pictures he saw. He uses my pictures
 to work on himself and he told me. Mostly he uses private numbers to 
call me so I wouldn’t be able to call back. That ‘s why I sometimes 
don’t pick private numbers.<br />

<strong>What is the craziest thing you have done to a fan ?</strong><br />

There was this crazy guy that got my number from somewhere. This guy 
sends me message everyday of my life, everyday. Telling me how he loves 
me and how he wants to marry me, till date. At a point I had to call him
 and invited him over. I mean this guy has been sending me messages for 
more than two years straight, everyday.<br />

My sisters, everybody in my house knows about it. One day I decided 
to invite him   over but when I came out to receive him, he was nowhere 
to be found. He later called that he could not face me.<br />

<strong>What is the worst scandal of your life?</strong><br />

There was a time I was in South Africa, they wrote something about me
 that an Alhaji and I were getting married in America. It wasn’t true, I
 was in South Africa and they said I was in America. Then I was working 
in South Africa. They said that I went to his office and his wife saw me
 in the office and embarrassed me. They said me and the wife got into a 
fight, that people had to come to separate us. I had a relationship and I
 was very heartbroken. I’ve had lots of them like that. Some people 
actually believed that story but there was a mix up. That story 
shattered me at the time.<br />

<strong>Why did you refuse a marriage proposal from your boyfriend</strong><br />

A man cannot just come out and tell me to stop what I’m doing because
 he wants to marry me. I’m not desperate for marriage. Marriage will 
come when it will come. My man will come when it’s the right time for 
him to appear. When my husband comes, he won’t tell me to stop what I’m 
doing. My husband would be my fan and love what I’m doing, my husband 
would encourage me.<br />

<strong>Your boyfriend was telling you to leave acting for him?</strong><br />

Yes, and become a complete housewife. I’m an Anambra girl, we don’t 
do like that. We’re hardworking women. That’s the kind of blood I’m born
 with; I can’t just leave what I’m doing. Marriage is not a do or die 
affair<br />

<strong>What about dating Senators, Governors and Politicians, is it true or false?</strong><br />

I have friends all over. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re dating 
the person but you know how the world is, if they see you with someone 
or you’re friends with someone, they conclude you’re dating the person.<br />

Lots of new things, it would be a surprise package.<br />

There was confusion on Monday, as leader of the Movement for the 
Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph 
Uwazuruike, disclosed that the Director of Radio Biafra and Leader of 
the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrested on
 Saturday, by the Department of State Services (DSS), does not belong to
 the movement.Uwazuruike, who spoke through his Assistant Director of Information, 
Sunday Okereafor, in Owerri, the Imo State capital, described Kanu as a 
rebel who had long been expelled by MASSOB for inciting violence among 
members.<br />

“Kanu’s arrest has nothing to do with the struggle for a sovereign state of Biafra,” the MASSOB leader stated.<br />

He added that Kanu broke the group’s non-violence approach and was summarily dismissed.<br />

Uwazuruike, however, dismissed the allegation that MASSOB was behind 
the arrest of the Biafra Radio boss, adding that the movement cannot 
meddle into such unnecessary matters.<br />

Meanwhile, a faction of MASSOB had condemned the arrest, insisting that it could cause the country “diplomatic damage.”<br />

ENUGU – Director of  Radio Biafra and Leader of Indigenous People of 
Biafra, IPOB,  Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrested at Golden Tulip Essential 
Hotel, Ikeja, on Saturday, has been granted bail.<br />
Although, he is yet to fulfill his bail conditions.<br />

IPOB’s lawyer, Mr. Egechukwu Obetta lamented that Nnamdi Kanu was 
 put in the same cell with terrorists despite his life threatening 
health challenges.<br />

He said Kanu is selective to delicacies, adding that he (Kanu) vowed 
never to eat any food served by the Federal Government of Nigeria.<br />

However, midway into the chat with his lawyer, a call came in, 
indicating that Kanu has been granted bail in the sum of N2 million or 
with surety of N2 million with a civil servant of grade level 16.<br />

Obetta further said that “Last week, the Afenifere threatened to 
secede but nobody was vilified. I am talking about the recent Olu 
Falae’s kidnap case. The militants in the Niger Delta has done same.”<br />

‘How cabals within the Presidency allegedly hijacked Buhari’s ministerial appointments’

President Muhammadu Buhari has been asked to urgently save his party,
 the All Progressives Congress (APC), from sliding into crisis by 
reversing some of the nomination for ministerial positions he made.<br />

A statement yesterday, by a group, Save Democracy Contingent (SDC), 
alleged that some of the nominees were not members of the APC but got 
their appointments because they have relationships with a “cabal” within
 the Presidency and therefore do not merit their appointments.<br />
The group in the statement jointly signed by its President, Ade 
Ibitutu, and other officials, namely Ahmed Jibrin, Okon Eta and Chijioke
 Nkwocha, alleged that Zainab Ahmed, the nominee from Kaduna, was 
nominated because she is a cousin to the state governor, Nasir El- 
Rufai, adding that Aisha Abubakar was allegedly nominated for being the 
daughter of Abubakar Alhaji and niece of Mamman Daura.<br />

Recall that President Buhari has so far forwarded names of 37 
Nigerians in two batches to the Senate for confirmation as ministers.<br />

However, the president, last week, withdrew nomination of a former deputy governor of Niger State, Ahmed Ibeto.<br />

The upper house has already confirmed 18 of the nominees, with the 
remaining 18 to be screened tomorrow (Tuesday), for subsequent 
confirmation.<br />

The SDC also claimed that Suleiman Adamu was nominated merely for 
being Mr. Buhari’s nephew while Khadija Abba Bukar Ibrahim was picked 
because she was the wife of Abba Bukar Ibrahim, three time governor of 
Yobe State.<br />

In the South, the group alleged that a former Vice Chancellor of the 
University of Ibadan, Isaac Adewole, was nominated “merely to make sure 
that the imprimatur of the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is 
absent, despite the gentleman agreement reached with the governor of 
Osun State before Colonel Olagunsoye Oyilola (rtd) decamped to APC.”<br />

It also alleged that Claudius Daramola was chosen to diminish the 
hold of a former governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu, in the South 
West.<br />

The SDC further claimed that Anthony Anwuka, a professor, was 
nominated because he is an in-law to Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo 
State, “in spite of the fact that he was indicted by a White Paper of 
Visitation Panel led by S.A. Nsofor, JCA, which investigated the affairs
 of Imo State University and against the declaration of Justice Ngozi 
Opara of Imo State High Court on 29th of January, 2013.”<br />

It said the appointment of persons indicted into position of 
authority is illegal, unconstitutional, immoral, null and void is 
binding.<br />

It also faulted the appointment of Geoffrey Onyeama, an indigene of 
Enugu State, who it said was nominated because he was a class mate and 
friend of Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to the President<br />

It further claimed that Okechukwu Enelama was nominated merely for being the Deputy Pastor to the Vice President.<br />

The group said, “Unfolding events have shown that our great Party the
 APC is dangerously sliding into crisis of unimaginable dimension. Our 
genuine fear is that if APC implodes or runs into the palpable crisis 
being brewed wittingly or unwittingly by a cabal around Mr President, it
 will definitely impact negatively in the country’s democratic 
landscape.<br />

“For the avoidance of doubt, we are not making this statement because
 no youth made his ministerial list; but genuine concern to say capital 
NO to the deceit making rounds that the cabal which hijacked power from 
President Buhari is Kaduna Mafia. The tag of Kaduna Mafioso is being 
weaved to hold tightly on Northerners who in all Mr President’s four 
elections of 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015 pro bono obliged him vote bank of
 12 million votes.”<br />

The group stated that its analysis showed that the cabal was a 
sophisticated fascist variant, with uncanny capacity exemplified by the 
response of some sections of the country when it was alleged that Mr. 
Tinubu, the national leader of the APC, complained over the lopsided 
nature of the initial appointments the president made.<br />

“The crass nepotism and cronyism unfortunately have spread across in the ministerial nomination,” the group argued.<br />

“It is akin to the early days of Hitler’s fascism; where people will 
say the annihilation doesn’t concern them because they are not 
communists nor Jews or Catholics, until it spread.<br />

“The Fascist Cabal is given an impression that President Buhari will 
run for one term, even if this is the case; is it enough reason to kill 
APC? Or kill the integrity quotient of President Buhari?”<br />

The SDC said though it was not challenging the powers of the 
president under the 1999 Constitution to appoint whomsoever he deemed 
fit, he should, in the interest of fairness, equity, natural justice and
 survival of APC, urgently “reverse the Signature of the Fascist Cabal, 
especially in the 2nd Ministerial Nominees List as the Window of 
Substitution is still wide open.”<br />

It said, “Accordingly, we appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,
 to urgently reverse the ignoble Signature of the Fascist Cabal, as the

Police kill 3 Senegalese cattle rustlers in Kano

KANO— It was end of the road for three Senegalese cow thieves, 
identified by police as Umar Dogo Ndaiye, Datti Umar Rodi and Mammadu 
Dogo, after a gun duel with security forces at Falgore forest yesterday.<br />
The Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Musa Katsina, while parading 74 
rustlers, along with 818 cows and 87 sheep, said: “Umaru Dogo Ndaiye, a 
Senegalese national, was gunned down when he engaged our men in a gun 
battle at Falgore forest by Gazobi village.<br />

He later gave up the ghost while receiving treatment in the hospital.”<br />

The commissioner also said the other two deceased lost their lives in the cause of the gun battle with police.<br />

He said that the police recovered a large cache of arms.<br />

He said some of the suspects were nabbed, clad in police and army 
camouflage which they used to intimidate and rob Fulani herdsmen<br />

“A revolver pistol and 224 cattle were recovered from the notorious 
kingpin, while four other members of his gang were arrested,’’ he said.<br />

Katsina stated that during the month-long special operation at 
Falgore forest and environs, the police also recovered 42 AK 47 rifles 
and 28 live cartridges.<br />

The police commissioner, who paraded the suspects and recovered 
livestock before the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and Emir of
 Kano, His Highness, Muhammad Sanusi II at<br />

Alarmed by the emerging development, Governor Ganduje in his speech, described the activities of rustlers as worrisome.<br />

“This is happening as we are yet to recover from the menace of 
insurgency, but now another frightening dimension of crime has 
resurfaced, which is alarming,” the governor said.<br />
Ganduje, who assured security agencies of the state government’s 
supports in efforts to fish out those involved in cattle rustling, urged

Breaking news: Protest in Kogi LGA over unpaid salaries

Workers of Mopamuro Local Government Area under the aegis of the 
Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees took to the streets today 
to protest what they termed “delayed and percentage payment” by 
authorities of the council.<br />
The workers decreed alleged plan by the Local Government authorities 
to pay them 10 percent of their September salaries. They said the 
Council is owing them arrears of over 15 months.
<br />
A female employee who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity 
said her children have been sent home from school as he could not pay 
their fees. She said her family lives in hunger.<br />

I am a widow and solely responsible for the welfare of my family. But
 since they started paying us 25 percent salaries, our lives have been 
miserable. I cannot even pay their fees and I come to work every day. 
This is unfair and we are ready to fight for our right”.<br />

Another employee who craved anonymity for administrative protection 
said the authorities have been playing on the intelligence of the 
workers.<br />

In his words: “We know how much comes into this Local Government 
every month and it is time to tell the world why they cannot pay us full
 salaries. They are insensitive to our plight. We are hungry and will 
prove to them that a hungry man is an angry man”.<br />

Meanwhile, the SSA 3 in the Local Government Area, Mr. Dennis Kayode 
Komolafe appealed to the workers to remain calm as government is working
 round the clock to salvage the situation.<br />

“I want to appeal to the workers to remain calm as our governor has 
promised to sink the chunk of the expected bailout on clearing the 
salary arrears in our Local Government Areas. Very soon, we shall be 
able to put smiles on the lips of our workers”, he assured.

DSS commissions 385 officers, to tackle insecurity

DEPARTMENT of State Services (DSS) weekend, in Lagos, commissioned 385 
cadet officers in a bid to combat the rising security challenges in the 
country.<br />
The 385 officers were the lucky ones that successfully went through 
10 months of rigorous professional, academic and physical training and 
were certified fit to serve the nation in their capacity as members of 
DSS, out of the 459 cadet officers that started the training late last 
year.<br />

The officers were commissioned amidst promises by the DSS to 
collaborate more with other sister security agencies in its fight 
against insecurity and to ensure that recruitment into the Service was 
merit-based in keeping with its extant guidelines.<br />

Speaking at the passing out parade at the State Service Academy 
(SSA), Lagos State, the Director General, SS, Mr. Lawal Daura, said gone
 were the days when misfits or non-eligible candidates found their way 
into the Service.<br />

“The aim is to ensure that only the right calibers of people are 
recruited into the Service,” he said, adding “recruitment will be 
strictly in accordance with future needs of the Service and other 
compelling exigencies that may come up from time to time.”<br />

He said the commissioning was an attempt by the Service to rejuvenate
 itself through injection of new blood and new vigour, saying that any 
institution that fails to change with the times or periodically 
re-evaluate itself would ultimately become irrelevant or extinct.<br />

He said: “I believe the Service requires new blood and new vigour to 
tackle the challenges of insecurity, the fight against corruption and 
the war to resuscitate the economy. These are the key areas the 
administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to tackle and 
the Department of State Service has seamlessly keyed into them.”<br />

He urged the officers to uphold the values and ethics of the Service 
as advancement in the career was hinged on knowledge of the rules and 
regulation as well as quality of professional skills demonstrated by an 
individual officer. “During your training, the values of discipline, 
loyalty and commitment to duty were constantly drilled into you. 
Discipline within the Service cannot be over looked or compromised. It 
is the bedrock upon which the Service is built. You must familiarise 
yourself with the rules and regulations of the Service. Any breach of 
the said rules and regulations will not be accepted,” he stated.<br />

In his remark as the special guest of honour, the Chief of Defence 
Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, emphasised the need for synergy among 
security agencies in the country, stressing that such collaborative and 
cooperative posture should not only be sustained at all levels, but 
strengthened to create an environment where the collective security 
output would meet national aspirations.<br />

He charged the newly commissioned officers to work assiduously at 
‘this critical period in our national development when all hands are on 
deck to exterminate terrorism from Nigeria.’<br />

“You are all aware of various security challenges pervading our 
nation. These challenges include the activities of Boko Haram 
terrorists, armed banditry, kidnapping, militancy of various forms to 
mention a few.<br />

In order to overcome these challenges, the whole nation relies on 
active participation of relevant stakeholders of which Department of 
State Services is one,” Olonisakin added.<br />

In a statement issued in Abakaliki, the National Director of 
Information, MASSOB, Comrade Uchenna Madu threatened that any refusal by
 the federal government to ensure the release of Kanu would lead to a 
world wide demonstration, protest which would endanger the already 
battered image of Nigeria before the international communities.<br />

The statement read in part: “MASSOB Faction condemned the cowardly 
arrest and detention of Radio Biafra Director but also accept the fact 
that it is part of non violence struggle; no agitation is complete 
without arrest, detention & prosecution. <br />

“It shape the minds of the activist, drawing sympathy from the 
internal and external observers. It also shows that Nnamdi Kanu and 
Radio Biafra have become a factor of reckoning in Nigeria.<br />

“The arrest & detention of Nnamdi Kanu by DSS will assist 
immensely in reviving the consciousness & sympathy for Biafra 
actualization in higher dimension which was temporary halted by Ralph 
Uwazuruike’s deviation & lust of wealth. <br />

“This singular arrest will cause more diplomatic harm on Nigeria’s 
image than good. Before Nnamdi Kanu’s arrest, he has succeeded in 
rooting the Biafra struggle in about 78 countries including Biafraland<br />

A suspected female Boko Haram suicide bomber was today shot dead by 
Nigerian soldiers after she attempted to forcefully enter into Maimalari
 army barracks in Maiduguri, Borno state with an explosive concealed in 
her handbag.<br />

According to reports, a woman was making her way towards the entrance of
 the barracks when she was asked to stop by soldiers for a thorough 
search.<br />

“I spend most of my time at home meditating. All I want to do is to 
keep spreading the gospel. In my own little way, I have been into 
evangelisation visiting places like Ughelli and within the Orile 
community, Ajegunle and so on. God has been kind during these visits to 
preach the gospel to people who are yet to receive Christ. We believe He
 will take us global very soon,” Taribo said.<br />

It will be recalled that Super Eagles attacker, Brown Ideye came out

“Your background experience counts. We turn to God to give us direction. I’m happy how far He has taken us.<br />

“The gospel is for the poor, rich and noble. Part of the gift God 
gave me is to reach out to the downtrodden. It is good if you can reach 
out to the downtrodden, preach the gospel to them and try to meet some 
of their needs through humanitarian services. I’m grateful to God for 
using me to spread the gospel across to these people,” he said.<br />

On getting to Europe, Taribo would find himself entangled in another life of charms and superstitious beliefs.<br />

A move from Auxerre to Milan saw him playing for rivals AC and Inter —
 one of few players to achieve the feat — in a three-year stint in 
Italy.<br />

With a new-found life of affluence, the big defender paid huge sums 
of money for him to be supplied charms to win games, protect him from 
career-threatening injuries and also to be foretold the results of 
matches before they were played.<br />

The 1998 UEFA Cup winner used to burn candles and hold a magical 
stone from Israel before games but he is bewildered that people are 
reluctant to publicly identify themselves with the practice, saying 
players and officials are deeply involved in the act.<br />

Taribo said, “Of course yes (I was involved). I don’t know why people
 decline to talk about their involvement with charms. Football has to do
 with a lot of powers. When there are big events, you look at the 
stadium, you see people, fans invoking all kinds of things; magicians 
are there, voodooists are there.<br />

“In my playing days, when I was ignorant, I used to get some mallams 
and babalawos (traditional doctors) to make charms for us, which we took
 to (national) camp. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.<br />

“In some clubs, before every game, the president or leader of the 
club will give you a lucky charm to play with. They will tell you to put
 it in your boots or socks and play. It’s their superstitious belief; 
that it can help them win matches.<br />

“There are some coaches who are connected to African magicians and 
soothsayers from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Zaire or even Nigeria. These 
people are consulted to give these coaches results of games even before 
the matches are played.<br />

“These people see strange things and they can tell you with their 
magic and charms, what the outcome of a match will be. People believe 
and use it. It works for those who believe in it. I saw it, I 
experienced it, I was with players that used it and I used it. So, why 
are people denying it? There are charms and rituals in football. It 
still exists.”<br />

When Patience Ikemefuna, an evangelist who lives in America paid 
Taribo a visit in Milan, it marked a new phase in the 1996 Olympic Games
 gold medallist’s life.<br />

Ikemefuna was perplexed when she discovered that Taribo was deeply 
involved in occultism. There were charms in his wardrobe and other parts
 of his apartment. Even though her host resisted initially, she 
convinced him and after several praying sessions, Taribo gave his life 
to Christ.<br />

Today, even though they are not biologically related, he refers to Ikemefuna as “my sister.”<br />

“God used her to change my life and ever since, my life has never 
been the same. I’m grateful to her. When I had an encounter with God and
 I became born again, I discovered that these powers were powerless. It 
was an avenue to collect money from us. There are lots of voodoo 
practices in football. If you are not with God, you have to be with the 
devil; with the devil they come with everything,” he added.<br />

What is the difference between life in Christ and one filled with charms?<br />

“You can’t compare,” he said. “When I was living that ignorant life, I
 was in darkness. In the darkness, the devil can give you what God can 
also give you, but he will give you without joy and peace. Eventually, 
you will end up in sorrow. But when you experience the joy of Christ, it
 adds no sorrow.<br />

“The joy of the Lord is not only my strength; it gives me everything I
 need in life. The love of Christ comes with freedom, success, favour, 
expansion and a better life. When you have all these, you have 
everlasting peace. That is why I am comfortable today and I’m happy how 
God has seen me thus far.”<br />

But being a pastor doesn’t mean he is free from temptations. In fact 
he realises that there are even tougher battles to fight as a cleric.<br />

“Temptation is permanent; it’s there every hour, every day but if you
 begin to study the Bible, there are principles that God has laid down 
for us. If you follow this, the devil will not keep you.<br />

“From my house to the bus stop, I may see a young girl not properly 
brought up, dressed half- Unclad walking on the streets. You will see 
temptation right there. But you have to pray for God’s grace to overcome
 the temptation.”<br />

After a career that has seen him play football in Nigeria, France, 
Italy, England, Germany, Yugoslavia, UAE and Iran, Taribo has seen it 
all and aptly names his church a shelter.<br />

He added, “We told ourselves to fast and ask God for a name for the 
ministry. In the process, a sister came up and said a voice told her 
that we should call the ministry Shelter in The Storm Miracle 
Ministries. That’s how we got the name.<br />

“During my journeys, God created a shelter for me and transferred me 
into that fold. There are lots of natural disasters everywhere in the 
world in these last days. There are crisis in Asia; there is terrorism 
and sectarian groups springing up. People are migrating from all over 
the world to Europe because of fear. In the midst of all these, God has 
created for everyone a shelter, where everything in your life will be 
restored again.”<br />

Even though he is no longer actively involved in the game, which gave
 him the good life and saw him resident in some of the world’s biggest 
cities, the Super Eagles — with whom he played two World Cups and two 
Africa Cup of Nations — is still very dear to Pastor Taribo West.<br />

“We need to pray for the team and I have taken it as an assignment to
 pray for the team. The national team is part of my body, it’s my 
family.”<br />

PDP has accused President Buhari of being the dictator he was alleged to
 have been while he was Nigeria's head of state in 1984. At a press 
conference in Abuja today October 18th, the national publicity secretary
 of PDP, O<span style="color: #777777;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">l</span></span>isa
 Metuh said the anti-corruption crusade by president Buhari and the APC 
has shown that it was an orchestrated plan targeted at PDP and its 
former governors.<br />

expose the hypocrisy, double standard and dictatorial proclivities of 
the</span><span style="background-color: #fdfdfd; line-height: 1.5em; text-align: justify;"> </span><span style="background-color: #fdfdfd; line-height: 1.5em; text-align: justify;">President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC Government in its orchestrated anti-corruption fight in Nigeria.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: #fdfdfd; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 10px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Whereas
 the PDP has over time restated its support for a credible, holistic 
fight against corruption, unfolding events have confirmed our position 
that this administration is only using the anti-corruption posture as a 
tool to witch-hunt PDP members and perceived political opponents of APC 
government.</span></span></div>

were petitions against their former governors. Whereas the former APC 
governors of Lagos and Rivers were rewarded with ministerial 
nominations, their Akwa Ibom PDP counterpart and the current Senate 
Minority Leader is being hounded by the EFCC.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: #fdfdfd; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 10px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This
 is in spite of the common knowledge that Akwa-Ibom under the Senator 
Akpabio is arguably the least indebted state in Nigeria, and where the 
governor appropriately applied available resources to effectively 
transform the state. We challenge the APC to show Nigerians any of their
 governor that matched the feats achieved in Akwa-Ibom under Senator 
Akpabio, whose only building in Uyo is uncompleted and being built with 
verifiable bank loans.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: #fdfdfd; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 10px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The
 PDP therefore state categorically that the orchestrated investigation 
of Senator Akpabio is politically motivated and targeted at weakening 
the PDP for 2019 elections, by virtue of his being the face of 
opposition in the National Assembly.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: #fdfdfd; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 10px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">It
 is also part of the fight by the Presidency to weaken the legislature 
as an arm of government and prevent it from effectively carrying out its
 constitutional role of checks and balances in a democracy.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: #fdfdfd; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 10px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">As
 we speak, no APC member, despite the public petitions of corruption and
 squandering of state funds, has been invited or questioned by the EFCC.
 We challenge the EFCC, as an anti-corruption agency, to show Nigerians 
any member of the APC it has so far questioned, not to talk of being 
arrested since the emergence of this administration, despite petitions 
against them.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: #fdfdfd; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 10px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Recall
 that even the case of former Adamawa state Governor Murtala Nyako 
started before the advent of the current administration but is now 
reportedly being worked on ostensibly to extricate APC members involved.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: #fdfdfd; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px 0px 10px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This
 government has established itself as a hypocritical regime that 
accommodates corruption, profligacy and sleazes in government quarters 
while hoodwinking the people and witch-hunting PDP members.</span></span></div>

 hypocrisy of this administration came to the fore with the show of 
insensitivity to the mood of the nation as copiously demonstrated in <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_637610749" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ">Saturday’s</span></span>
 ostentatious thanksgiving party (with hundreds of millions of naira 
spent) by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SFG) Engr.
 Babachir David Lawal, at a time the people of the North East 
geo-political zone, where he hails from, are being ravaged by 
insurgency.</span></span></div>

18-year-old Nicole and Jonas Maines were born identical twin boys. 
Nicole who was named Wyatt at birth, recently made the brave decision to
 undergo a sex reassignment surgery.<br />

"Being a girl just felt right," Nicole said "It felt like that's what I 
was supposed to be, and I've never looked back. I've never felt like I 
made the wrong decision. I've never felt like I'm doing the wrong thing 
with my life. I just knew this is exactly where I'm supposed to be right
 now. I knew that I was trans when I was 3 years old. Well, I didn't 
know trans because I didn't know there was a word for it, but I just 
knew that in my head and my heart that I was supposed to be a girl."<br />
 For her parents Kelly and Wayne Maines, it was puzzling at first.<br />

"I knew that Nicole was different. I didn't know what it was. I didn't 
know that she was transgender at 3, I just knew she wasn't like the 
other twin," said Kelly Maines. "She played all the girl roles, she 
always wanted to dress as a girl character, so I knew there was 
something different about her. I just made it a point of making sure 
that I could do whatever I could do for her to get her where she needed 
to be and also to know she always had a safe place to be with me,"

Nicole's father Wayne struggled with the idea of letting go of one of his sons.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"When the twins were born I had these dreams," he said. "I already knew 
what deer rifles I was going to buy, and by the time they were 2 years 
old they were going to have them. Football, basketball, everything we 
thought about for me was 'the boys.'"

He tried ignoring Wyatt's desire to be different, but over time he came 
to realize that this is what Nicole wanted.
      When we let her go out in a dress, and this kid beamed and was 
happier," Wayne Maines said. "Then I started to think about it, 'man, I 
gotta change who I am.' … I had to dig deep into my soul and say, 'Hey 
what are you afraid of?' …You gotta dig deep and ask yourself, 'How much
 do you love your kid?' and do the right thing."<br />
<br />
So Kelly and Wayne supported Wyatt in having long hair and wearing 
girl's clothing, and Nicole wasn't shy about telling people who she was.
 When she was in first grade, Nicole said she would go up to someone and
 say she was "a boy who wants to be a girl."<br />

"I didn't think there was anything wrong with it," Nicole said. "And of 
course, kids' parents were like freaking out and kids were like 'Oh 
cool, I like trucks.' … it was just a thing that came with my 
introduction."

By the time she was in fourth grade, Nicole began to think about 
changing her name from Wyatt to something new she felt would be more of 
"a girl's name." She started looking at TV characters that resonated 
with her and settled on a character's name from one of her favorites.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"There was this character on a show called Zoey 101," she said. "It had 
Jamie Lynn Spear, I think her name is and like one of her classmates' 
name was Nicole. And she was just like really quirky and like fun. And I
 was like, 'oh she's a lot like me. I'm a Nicole.'"

By age 8, "Wyatt" was no longer, but by middle school, Nicole said she 
was beginning to feel ostracized by her classmates.
      "Kids would say there's something wrong with me," she said. "And I
 would come home crying on the bus like 'Mom, Dad I'm a freak. There's 
something wrong with me. This isn't right.' I'm like, 'It feels right to
 me but it can't be right because people are telling me that it's not 
right.' And my parents would tell me, 'Listen, don't listen to them. Be 
true to yourself. This is who you are. Just be true to you.'"<br />
<br />
Jonas was fiercely supportive of his sister during this time.
      When I was a kid my dad told me to look after her and to protect 
her and do what you have to do," he said. "So that was a huge 
responsibility that I had to carry around for a lot of years."
Then there was the school bathroom issue. For most of her time in 
elementary school, Nicole used the girl's restroom without issue, until a
 grandfather of one of her classmates complained to school officials.<br />
<br />
The Maines family filed and won a discrimination lawsuit against their 
school district in Maine, scoring a big human rights victory for trans 
kids. The case changed Maine state law.
      It really did just start out with me calling the Maine human 
rights commission and going, 'Hey - this is so not right' and I never 
realized that it would ever spiral to where it did," Kelly Maines said.<br />
<br />
Since the lawsuit, Nicole has been in the media spotlight and her family
 has now become activists for the transgender cause. They are the 
subject of a new book called, "Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an
 American Family," to be released on Oct. 20.<br />
<br />
It's been a pivotal year for the transgender movement, in part because 
of Caitlyn Jenner's coming out story. Her speech at the Espy Awards, in 
particular when Jenner talked about trans youth, struck a chord with 
Nicole.
      I'm like, absolutely, because trans youth shouldn't have to take 
it, they should be able to go to school," Nicole said. "Trans kids, just
 kids in general, are not to be looked upon by society through a 
magnifying glass."<br />
<br />
Just a few days before her scheduled procedure, Nicole talked about her 
decision to go through with the surgery and called it her "light at the 
end of the tunnel."
      This is always what I needed," she said. "Over almost 18 years of 
life I've never thought back of you know what no I don't want surgery… I
 just felt like this is that final piece of the puzzle where my body is 
finally going to match what's happening in my head and my heart."
Now Nicole and her brother Jonas are in the middle of their first 
semester of college. It will be the first time the twins will be on 
their own.<br />
<br />
These days, the most pressing thing on Nicole's mind is passing 
midterms.
      "I'm happy," she said. "I like it. I mean I got my hair done 
today, I got my make-up on. I'm happy! I mean, I'm Nicole. I'm 
incredibly happy."<br />
