U.S. punishes Venezuela over undemocratic actions

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday 
imposing new financial sanctions on Venezuela over President Nicolas 
Maduro’s undemocratic actions amid efforts to consolidate his power.
 
The move prohibits dealings in new debt and equity issued by the Venezuelan government and the state-owned oil company. 

“These measures are carefully calibrated to deny the Maduro 
dictatorship a critical source of financing to maintain its illegitimate
 rule,” the White House said. 

It added that it would also “protect the U.S. financial system from complicity in Venezuela’s corruption.’’ 

The move came as Maduro has clamped down on political opposition and consolidated power in his government’s hands. 

Venezuela’s economy has been in a free fall and its citizens have 
suffered from food shortages and a sharp rise in violent crime. 

On Aug. 11, Trump issued a surprise threat to Maduro, warning that 
the U.S. might intervene in the chaos enveloping the South American 
country. 

“I’m not going to rule out a military option,” Trump said. 

“We have troops all over the world. … Venezuela is not very far away.’’ 

Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence told an audience in Florida on 
Wednesday that the U.S. would “bring the full measure of U.S. economic 
and diplomatic power to bear until democracy is restored in Venezuela.’’ 

The sanctions announced on Friday will apply to new debt and equity 
issued by the government of Venezuela on a case-by-case basis, but could
 exempt some financing necessary “for the legitimate activity of the 
National Assembly,” a senior administration official told reporters. 

The National Assembly had opposed the Maduro government’s efforts to 
consolidate power — until a controversial special election held earlier 
on July resulted in a number of Maduro’s supporters coming to power. 

The White House had already sanctioned Maduro and key members of his 
regime after the country went forward in rewriting its constitution to 
place more power in his hands. 

The latest sanctions carved out an exception for financing necessary 
for oil imports and exports, according to the White House release. 

What the White House can actually accomplish with its actions is 
another matter, however, and Maduro used Trump’s Aug. 11 threat of 
military action to drum up popular support. 

Placing sanctions on Venezuela’s crude oil exports to the U.S. — an 
option that the administration has said is on the table — would throttle
 the Maduro government’s much-needed access to hard currency, but would 
also be likely to precipitate a humanitarian disaster.</div>

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday hailed the successes recorded by the country in agriculture in the past two years. 

The President stated this when he received the State governors who paid him a good will visit at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. 

“You are all doing your best and we are lucky our best has proved to be good enough. 

“(Our) emphasis (has been) on agriculture and solid minerals right from our campaign days. 

“We are more successful on agriculture because I think people could not afford to buy foreign food. 

“And all that we have learnt we will revert to the old system that we
 had of cooperatives right from local government levels up to the 
centre. 

“I am very pleased with the reaction and don’t forget, I was told 
that most of the food, because Naira has gone down, are being bought by 
people from Burkina Faso to the Central African Republic. 

“That trade has been there for generations and we cannot stop it,” he said. 

The President remarked that the devaluation of the Naira was unfortunate but not the making of the present administration. 

Buhari stated that people had asked him to be more strict on the 
border, adding that “we said that we will be strict on imported food so 
that our farmers can be more encouraged’’. 

He also thanked God that last year and this year, the harvest throughout the country was much better than it used to be. 

The president expressed elation that Nigerians had embraced farming and had worked hard on their lands to produce more food. 

He also commended the efforts by the Vice President in his capacity 
as acting president during his three month absence from the country. 

“He (Osinbajo) exploited his youth and the intellect to be all over the place. 

“Thank God that I have the time towards him with the media 24 hours 
and I congratulate him and I allowed him to come and see me so that I 
can personally thank him for all that he has done,’’ he said. 

The President also stated that he was very happy with all the 
national prayers across the country which he acknowledged was very much 
covered and was beyond ethnic and religious barriers. 

Buhari thanked the governors for the visit, adding that his moral had been raised greatly by the love shown to him. 

The Zamfara Governor and Chairman of the governors Forum, Abdulaziz 
Yari, had stated that the governors were happy with the recovery and 
return of the President. 

He thanked him for the assistance he gave to the states to enable 
them to pay salaries, adding that without such support some of the 
states could not have functioned well. 

The Ebonyi Gov. Dave Umahi, also thanked God for the recovery of the 
President and his support to the states in the agriculture sector, Paris
 Club refund and assistance in salary payments. 

Umahi noted that Buhari had treated all states equally in spite of 
party differences, noting that it demonstrated the unity of the country. 

Similarly, governors Simon Lalong of Plateau and Yahaya Belĺo of Kogi
 States told state House Correspondents that the country was lucky to 
have the President back and expressed their hope that the administration
 would provide more for the people.</div>

President Donald Trump of U.S has pardoned controversial 85-year-old 
former Sheriff Joe Arpaio for a misdemeanor criminal contempt 
conviction. 

A statement issued by the White House Friday night said, “Today, 
President Donald J. Trump granted a Presidential pardon to Joe Arpaio, 
former Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona.” 

Known as “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” Arpaio gained a reputation for
 his harsh — his critics would say cruel — treatment of immigrants in 
the country illegally. 

Arpaio was convicted of criminal contempt earlier this summer for 
defying a judge’s order that his deputies stop detaining immigrants 
because they lacked legal status. 

His deputies carried on the practice for 18 months. 

Trump hinted at the pardon last week and again at a Phoenix rally Tuesday night. 

Last week, he told Fox News he was “seriously considering” a pardon 
and that Arpaio is a “a great American patriot” who has done “a lot in 
the fight against illegal immigration.” Tuesday night, he asked the 
crowd of supporters: “Do the people in this room like Sheriff Joe?” 

“You know what, I’ll make a prediction: I think he’s going to be just
 fine,” he said. “OK? But I won’t do it tonight, because I don’t want to
 cause any controversy.” 

“Arpaio’s life and career, which began at the age of 18 when he 
enlisted in the military after the outbreak of the Korean War, exemplify
 selfless public service. 

After serving in the Army, Arpaio became a police officer in 
Washington, D.C. and Las Vegas, NV and later served as a Special Agent 
for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), formerly the Bureau of 
Narcotics. After 25 years of admirable service, Arpaio went on to lead 
the DEA’s branch in Arizona. 

“In 1992, the problems facing his community pulled Arpaio out of 
retirement to return to law enforcement. He ran and won a campaign to 
become Sheriff of Maricopa County. 

Throughout his time as Sheriff, Arpaio continued his life’s work of 
protecting the public from the scourges of crime and illegal 
immigration. 

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now eighty-five years old, and after more than 
fifty years of admirable service to our Nation, he is worthy candidate 
for a Presidential pardon.”

U.S. State of Texas is facing a serious challenge which appears to be
 the country’s major disaster in 12 years as Hurricane Harvey approaches
 its coastline. 

Texas State Governor Greg Abbott, described the hurricane as a “very 
major disaster” for the southern U.S. state, while calling for more 
federal aid to cope with the storm. 

According to BBC, the disaster is now a category four storm as it powers across the Gulf of Mexico into Texas’ central coast. 

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said storm surges may bring life-threatening floods in and around Houston. 

At 18:00 (23:00 GMT), the storm was 45 miles (70 km) east of Corpus 
Christi, with maximum sustained winds of 130mph (215 km/h), the NHC 
said. 

The storm may bring 40in (102cm) of rain and 12ft (3.5m) storm surges, say forecasters. 

Mr Abbott said Harvey was now “turning into a very complex and 
dangerous hurricane” and that it is likely to strike at the heart of 
Texas’s oil refining industry, with Corpus Christi, a port city of 
320,000 people, in the path of the storm. 

In a letter to President Donald Trump requesting federal aid, Mr 
Abbott said: “The storm surge, coupled with the deluge of rain, could 
easily lead to billions of dollars of property damage and almost 
certainly loss of life.” 

The White House said Mr Trump is likely to visit Texas early next week.

The crisis in the Korean Peninsula is far from being resolved as 
North Korea on Friday fired “several projectiles” into sea off its 
eastern coast. 

According to the South Korean military, the missiles were launched 
from a site in the North Korean province of Gangwon and flew for about 
250km (150 miles). 

Since firing an intercontinental ballistic weapon last month, 
Pyongyang has threatened to aim missiles at the U.S. Pacific territory 
of Guam. 

But this latest test did not threaten the U.S. or Guam, the U.S. military said. 

The projectiles were first launched at 06:49 on Saturday (21:49 GMT Friday), South Korea’s Defence Ministry said. 

The U.S. military said three missiles were fired. 

“The first and third missiles failed in flight. The second missile 
launch appears to have blown up almost immediately,” said Commander Dave
 Benham of the U.S. Pacific Command. 

The launches were spread over a period of 30 minutes, he added. 

“The military is keeping a tight surveillance over the North to cope 
with further provocations,” the South Korean defence ministry said. 

Thousands of U.S. and South Korean troops are currently taking part 
in joint military drills, which are mainly largely computer-simulated 
exercises.

A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obidimma, emerged from a 
closed-door meeting with the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra 
(IPOB), Mr Nnamdi Kanu, and insisted on peace and unity of Nigeria. 

After the meeting with the IPOB leaders, the Priest called on Kanu and his supporters, to work for peace. 

Obidimma, the Parish Priest of Blessed Iwene Tansi, Umudioka, 
Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra, gave the advice when Kanu 
led his members on thank you visit to him on Monday. 

The cleric, also the Spiritual Director of Holy Ghost Adoration 
Ministry in Idemili North Local Government of the state, condemned 
group’s no-election campaign in Anambra. 

He advised them to ensure there was no breech of peace in whatever 
they do, adding that they should stop the call for disintegration of the
 country. 

The priest, who had a closed door meeting with Kanu, told newsmen 
that he had fruitful discussion with Kanu on issues of general concern 
and the way forward. 

He said that he warned Kanu on the campaign to boycott Nov. 18 Anambra governorship election. 

“For me, it will be more problematic to say that there won’t be any 
election in Anambra, it is like somebody firing gun on his toes. 

“Christ came into the world and reincarnated the message of peace and
 that was why I advised Kanu to uphold peace following the tensions 
everywhere in the country. Let love lead all that we do. 

“I advised him to do anything within his power to forestall peace, even in their agitation, let there be prudence, ” he said. 

The cleric expressed support for the restructuring of Nigeria, and 
criticised the inequity in distribution of the nation’s wealth at the 
detriment of some sections of the country. 

“In our country Nigeria, it is certain that there is marginalisation, nepotism and tribalism. 

“We are one Nigeria but some people are being marginalised and that 
is why we have all these agitations but in everything, let there be 
prudence as we also pray for divine intervention. 

“Igbos are clamouring for Biafra but an average Igbo man is selfish 
in nature and the question is, how matured are we to handle our affairs. 

“Where are the Igbo cabals and stakeholders; like Nnia Nwodo, Peter 
Obi, Emeka Anyaoku, Ifeanyi Ubah, Prof Charles Soludo, Emmanuel 
Iwuanwaywu, and many others. 

“There has to be a unifying umbrella where they will gather and register their protest,” he said. 

He thanked God for President Muhammadu Buhari’s safe return and quick
 recovery, and called on him to look into agitations bedeviling the 
nation and mindless killings. 

“We thank God for Buhari’s return and the entire ministry has been praying for his safe return. 

“Nobody will wish a fellow human being dead but the president should know that Nigerians love him, ” he said.

The warring factions of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in
 Kogi state are to face a reconciliation committee inaugurated by the 
party. 

The party’s move is to frontally take measures to resolve the crisis 
between Kogi governor Yahaya Bello and Senator Dino Melaye and their 
supporters. 

Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, National Chairman of the All Progressives 
Congress (APC), has inaugurated a seven-member reconciliation committee 
to end the feud. 

He said the situation in Kogi was unique, saying that what triggered the event in the state was tragic in their nature. 
 
He added that the party leadership was bending backwards because it 
understood the feelings of the people and what they had been through. 

´´ We understand the work that you have put in to get the APC 
elected; we understand also that God who disposes of power, brought 
somebody at the last minute to be the beneficiary of all the work and 
labour that everybody obviously had put in. 

´´Fortunately, we had a fact-finding committee that has done a lot of
 the basic work and submitted a report which will be made available to 
the reconciliation committee. 

´´We know the principal parties in the various groups in Kogi; we know what their grievances are. 

´´So the issue now is really to call just the principal groups and say look, this has to stop, how do we go about it. 

´´The governor of course will be there to say his piece and give you all the assistance necessary to make your task successful. 

“We want peace in Kogi state. Events there have been very very 
unusual. But like I said, given the emotive nature of the event that led
 to it, we have decided to stretch the opportunities for reaching 
peace,´´ he said. 

According to a statement issued by Malam Bolaji Abudullahi, the APC 
National Publicity Secretary, the committee is chaired by Gen. Idris 
Garba, while the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Mr Victor Giadom 
would be its Secretary. 

Other members of the committee are: Chief Don Etiebet; Rt. Hon. 
Patricia Etteh; Group. Capt. Rufai Garba; Alhaji Umar Lawan Kareto and 
Group. Capt. Joe Orji. 

Odigie-Oyegun thanked members of the committee for agreeing to serve 
the party in the committee, adding that the party´s leadership wanted 
peace and settlement in its Kogi chapter. 

The chairman of the committee thanked the party for the opportunity 
to serve and assured the party that the committee wold bring peace and 
settlement to the party in Kogi 

“There is no doubt that it is an onerous task, but we are committed 
people and believe in bringing our experiences to bear on the issue, we 
will be able to resolve the issue as directed by our great party,´´ he

Kogi traces strange killer disease to gastroenteritis

The rampaging unknown disease which has killed many people in Kogi state has been diagnosed to be gastroenteritis. 

It is reported that more than 62 persons have been killed in two 
weeks when the situation came to limelight, but Kogi State Commissioner 
for Health, Dr Saka Audu, said on Sunday that the casualty is 
exaggerated. 

He said the figure was given by local leaders in the affected areas and was yet to be verified by government. 

“ We will investigate and trace the dead people to the grave yard and come up with the correct figure,’’ he said. 

He called for calmness, in an interview with the News Agency of 
Nigeria in Lokoja as the disease has been traced to be gastroenteritis 
and malaria. 

The state Ministry of Health, had in a statement, said that the 
disease killed many people in Okunran, Okoloke and Isanlu-Esa in Yagba 
West Local Government Area. 

“The current information available to us is that the disease actually
 started six weeks ago in Okoloke village in Yagba West, which is a 
settlement that is predominantly inhabited by Fulani herdsmen. 

“There have been cases of reported deaths following abdominal pain, 
vomiting and diarrhoea, but the patients who showed signs of illness had
 since been evacuated and transported to Kogi State Specialist Hospital 
Lokoja, for better treatment. 

“So far, we have evacuated 39 patients from Okoloke area and only six
 of them were admitted and have shown significant sign of improvement 
while others have since been discharged. 

“Out of the six that were admitted, three of them were diagnosed of 
gastroenteritis and the remaining three were just cases of malaria, and 
they have shown remarkable signs of improvement,” Audu said. 

He also stressed that the disease was not Lassa fever, saying the 
result of samples taken from the patients to Irua General Hospital for 
investigation proved negative. 

“We want to assure the general public that government is doing all 
that is humanly possible to stay on top of the situation and forestall 
further loss of lives. 

“We will continue to inform the public as the investigation progresses,’’ Audu said.

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist movement 
organisation, has confirmed setting up vigilance group, Biafra Security 
Service, BSS,
 
It debunked insinuations that BSS is a standing army, but stressed that what it established is a vigilance group, 

The group would only gather intelligence and ensure that criminal 
elements do not compromise the safety and welfare of people residing in 
Biafra land. 

The Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Comrade Emma Powerful, told the <a href="http://sunnewsonline.com/october-1-quit-notice-why-we-set-up-biafra-guards-ipob/">Sunday Sun,</a> that the group would not be militarised as erroneously construed in certain quarters and in various online media reports. 

Powerful said that members of the group were naturally peace loving people. 

He also dismissed as untrue the story that made the rounds that the 
leader of the group, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, made uniforms for members of the 
vigilance group. 

He noted that IPOB was interested in the well-being of the people and
 ready to ensure the safety of its people returning from the North over 
the October 1 quit notice served on Igbo people in the North by a 
coalition of Arewa youths. 

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, did not sew any uniform for 
these volunteers erroneously called Biafra soldiers. There is no 
standing Biafra Army and we emphasize the word NO. We have security 
volunteers just like you have vigilance groups. IPOB is legitimately 
concerned about the well being and safety of Biafrans all over the 
world. 

“With October 1, 2017 looming, it has fallen on IPOB to ensure the 
welfare, safety and well being of Biafrans returning home to prevent 
what happened in 1966 from happening again. IPOB will not fold its arms 
and watch Hausa Fulani Janjaweed embark on another orgy of bloodbath 
directed at southerners living in the North. That’s why BSS was 
inaugurated to gather intelligence and to safeguard those returning home
 to Biafraland from the North. 

“IPOB is against all forms of lawlessness, from the menace of Fulani 
herdsmen to kidnapping, armed robbery and cattle rustling. All these 
vices will be stamped out in the coming months without recourse to armed
 confrontation.”

“The voice of the people is the voice of God”, says the popular adage. This no doubt has over the years proved to be very true. This voice can either be that of blacks or whites, majority or minority, or the voice for or against a motion. In a democratic society, the voice of the majority is often generally believed to be the voice of God whispered via the ballot box. This scenario though is one that has raised many questions still longing for answers. This is because discerning the voice of God between the voice of the majority and that of the minority is often a difficult task. 
 The majority must always have their way amidst the opinions of the minority which is often ignored. Majority and minority groups exist in every democratic society. They exists either on ethnic, political party, religious, racial or opinion lines. 
 Politics in Nigeria over the years has been one beclouded by sentiments and bias on all sort. Little wonder why everything is believed to be taking a turn from good to bad and gradually from bad to worst. Ethno-religious partisan politics take the place of objectivity, truth, fairness and accountability. Singing the praise of ills and wrongdoings for favors substitute objective and constructive criticisms. How then can the voice of the people portrayed as the majority be the voice of God amidst the aforementioned evens, when He (God) can also speak through the minority as well? 
 However, continuous lingering of ethno-religious sentiments as part of politicking within the country will be of no resort as it will ensure the country remains stagnated in virtually all areas. A foundation wrongly laid will lead to a collapsed system. A look away from the general activities of individuals into that of the various political parties accounts for nothing quite different as most of them to this dark path. 
 In the words of John Mason, “majority rule is not always right”. Why? You may be forced to ask. Always remember that the general outcome of elections is not solely the end product reflected via the ballot box, but the summation of all the various stages of the electioneering process summed up together.  
 
The antecedence in all electioneering process which climax into the emergence of a four years single term of an administration begins with intra-party activities from the declaration of interest by various aspirants to party primaries. If the choice of flag bearers by political parties are hastily or carefully done in a biased way, the electorate will be presented with no alternative than making a difficult decision of choosing between “the beast” and “the devil”, rather than choosing between “between” and “the beast”. 
 Bias and sentiments of all sorts must be totally eliminated or reduced to the barest minimum within political parties and the entirety of politicking within the country. This will not just ameliorate intra and inter party activities, but will also help improve the outcome of elections. Intra-party activities to a large extent influence the general outcome of elections as it serves as the building block upon which electoral decisions are made. 
 The voice of the people will always remain the voice of God. But we must let Him speak rightly through us and not speaking for Him out of our own selfish desires. A society devoid of ethno-religious sentiments will not just aid the right choice of leaders, but also enhance growth and development in all ramifications. It is appalling to come to terms with the fact that we look at the developed nations and applaud the way in which they do ordinary things in extraordinary ways, but we fail to follow in such light. If things must get better, we must desist from doing things the same old way that yielded little positive result, because doing things the same way will yield the same result. 
 Quit saying “he/she is not my tribe/religion”, rather choose to ask “is he/she the right person for the job?” To move ahead and stay ahead we must keep aside all forms of sentiments, focus on what is right, do what is right and go for what is right at all place and at all times. Development doesn’t fall from the sky; it comes along with our decisions and action.</div>
