<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the key to Nigeria’s quest for economic diversification and survival lies in agriculture and the manufacturing sector.<br />According to him, a strong manufacturing sector will create more jobs and wealth for people and it will also usher in sustainable economic prosperity.<br />Buhari made this comment yesterday in Abuja at the 44th Annual General Meeting of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN). with the theme, ‘Diversifying the Nigerian Economy: the Role of Government in Manufacturing.’<br />He also expressed appreciation to the president and the members of MAN for their immense contributions and unwavering commitment to the socio-economic development of Nigeria over the years.<br />Buhari noted that Nigeria owed MAN a debt of gratitude for their show of commitment, demonstrated by their respective investments in Nigeria’s economy despite daunting challenges.<br />He said this administration was convinced that the key to the nation’s quest for economic diversification and survival lies in agriculture and the manufacturing sector. A strong manufacturing sector will create more jobs and wealth for our people.<br />“It will usher in sustainable economic prosperity because we will produce what we consume as a nation and generate foreign exchange by exporting any surplus.<br />“The manufacturing sector is well positioned to be a major driver of Nigeria’s economic growth because of our immense natural resources and the entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians.”<br />Buhari stated that government was therefore focused on implementing necessary policies and strategies aimed at unleashing the full potential of manufacturing in Nigeria.<br />“We will rely heavily on your ideas and inputs at all stages of formulation and implementation of new industrial policies. For our part, we will remove bottlenecks and create a more business friendly environment,” he added.<br />Buhari remarked that his administration remained committed to partnering with MAN in the task of charting a brighter future for the country as government was very appreciative of their contributions in formulating national economic policies.<br />According to him, the theme, ‘Diversifying the Nigerian Economy: the Role of Government in Manufacturing,’ is quite apt as it is coming at a time when the nation is faced with the urgent need to diversify the economy in the light of the dwindling price of crude oil in the global market.<br />The president explained that the dramatic fall in crude oil and other commodity prices has had a serious negative impact on world economies, especially countries like Nigeria which depended on one commodity for its export earnings.<br />Furthermore, Buhari said the administration’s strategic plan to boost manufacturing activities in the country was supported by the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) and the National Enterprises Development Programme (NEDEP). These programmes, according to him, present a clear roadmap towards an industrialised Nigerian economy.<br />“We are working on improving the patronage of locally made goods, bridging the gap between skills required by industry and those provided by our educational institutions and access to finance for our Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs)<br />“We recognise that MAN and the other Organised Private Sector (OPS) groups are our key stakeholders in this journey and we will continue our engagement with you.<br />The president urged MAN to consider national interest, so that the outcome of their deliberations will be to the benefit of Nigerians workers and promoters alike and said he is looking forward to receiving a communiqué of the deliberations from this meeting.<br />“As events unfold in the coming months, many of you will be called upon to play critical roles in the implementation of this administration’s agenda. I implore you to avail us your wealth of experience so that together we can uplift our nation’s economy and social well-being.”</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">The suspended former Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, Abdulmumin Jibrin, seems not discouraged in his new anti-corruption crusade against the House of Representatives.<br />In a letter dated September 29, 2016 titled: ”burden of proof of evidence: running cost of honourable members of the House of Representatives,”  the lawmaker asked his colleagues to return a total of N10 million running cost allowance given to each member<br />His letter made available to reporters Thursday reads in part: “I wish to draw your attention to the fact that since you suspended me yesterday and the suggestion of the Ethics Committee report that my allegations were generalized and without proof, I have come under intense public scrutiny and pressure to prove that there exists systemic corruption in the House.<br />“I have taken it as a responsibility to prove to the public that the House is a den of systemic corruption. As colleagues, I have bound with many of you and built a life-long friendship.<br />“I have some of you that I hold in high esteem. If you end up at the receiving end of the actions I will be taking up in the next few days, I want you to know there is nothing personal but commitment and fervent desire to ensure that corruption is wiped out of the House and reforms that will restore the battered image of the House and take back the House to the Nigerian people is implemented.<br />“Consequent upon the above and before I proceed with the aggressive steps I intend to take, I hereby demand that if you have illegally taken or stolen any money meant for the running cost of your offices for your entire stay in the House.<br />“You should return the money within one week to the Clerk of the National Assembly. And for the purpose of clarity. I am referring to about N10 million you collect from tax payers monthly.<br />“The Clerk will provide you with official accounts details, failure of which I will take necessary action to ensure that you return any money stolen and stand witness against you in case of prosecution.<br />“I have written to the Clerk of the National Assembly to stand by in anticipation. In the face of the revenue challenges and biting hardship the country is currently facing, there is no better time the country needs such money than now.<br />“In the case of the Presiding and Principal Officers, in addition to my demand in this letter which applies to them too, I have written them yesterday and gave them 72 hours ultimatum to make public the total amount they have received as running cost in their entire stay in the House, failure of which I will proceed with necessary legal action to compel them to make the total amount each of them have received public.<br />“There are other issues of monumental corruption in the House that I will be raising in the following weeks which we must all deal with, but first let’s get done with this one.”<br />Jibrin was suspended for 180 legislative days over alleged misconduct and breach of the privileges of the members of the House.<br />His office was consequently sealed Thursday by National Assembly security agents.</span></div>

Sani Usman, the acting Director, Army Public Relations, however, said four soldiers died in the attack and their riffles missing, while two others sustained injuries.<br />Usman said the attack came in three waves with the terrorists, using 36 hand Grenades and Rocket Propelled Launchers.<br />He said the troops recovered two AK-47 Rifles, one FN Rifle, one G3 Rifle and 36 hand grenades after about an hour.<br />“The location have been reinforced and replenished while the troops have continued their clearance operations,” Usman said.</span></div>
