Workers of Mopamuro Local Government Area under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees took to the streets today to protest what they termed “delayed and percentage payment” by authorities of the council.
The workers decreed alleged plan by the Local Government authorities to pay them 10 percent of their September salaries. They said the Council is owing them arrears of over 15 months.
A female employee who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity said her children have been sent home from school as he could not pay their fees. She said her family lives in hunger.
I am a widow and solely responsible for the welfare of my family. But since they started paying us 25 percent salaries, our lives have been miserable. I cannot even pay their fees and I come to work every day. This is unfair and we are ready to fight for our right”.
Another employee who craved anonymity for administrative protection said the authorities have been playing on the intelligence of the workers.
In his words: “We know how much comes into this Local Government every month and it is time to tell the world why they cannot pay us full salaries. They are insensitive to our plight. We are hungry and will prove to them that a hungry man is an angry man”.
Meanwhile, the SSA 3 in the Local Government Area, Mr. Dennis Kayode Komolafe appealed to the workers to remain calm as government is working round the clock to salvage the situation.
“I want to appeal to the workers to remain calm as our governor has promised to sink the chunk of the expected bailout on clearing the salary arrears in our Local Government Areas. Very soon, we shall be able to put smiles on the lips of our workers”, he assured.
