Pregnancy changes a woman’s brain – study

<div style="background: white; line-height: 18.0pt; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<img alt="Pregnancy changes a woman’s brain – study" height="197" src="https://assets.today.ng/main/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/pregnancy-nigeria-690x340.png" width="400" /></div>
<div style="background: white; line-height: 18.0pt; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">According to a study
released on Monday, pregnancy causes “long-lasting” physical changes to a
woman’s brain, with significant, but seemingly beneficial, grey matter loss in
parts of the crucial organ.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Some alterations lasted at least
two years, they reported, but did not appear to erode memory or other mental
processes.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The changes “concern brain areas
associated with functions necessary to manage the challenges of motherhood,”
study co-author Erika Barba-Muller of the Autonomous University of Barcelona
(UAB) said in a statement.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The radical hormone surges and
physical changes of pregnancy have long been known and studied, but its effects
on the brain have been little understood.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The new study, published in
Nature Neuroscience, claims to provide the first evidence “that pregnancy
confers long-lasting changes in a woman’s brain.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It compared pre- and
post-pregnancy brain scans of 25 first-time mothers. They researchers also
looked at the brains of first-time fathers, as well as men and women with no
children.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; line-height: 18.0pt; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">It found
“pronounced and long-lasting GM (grey matter) volume reductions in a woman’s
brain” in pregnancy, in regions involved in social processes.</span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; line-height: 18.0pt; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In later tests, these same
regions lit up most on scans measuring the women’s responses to their babies.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The brain changes were likely an
adaptation for motherhood — boosting the ability to recognise the needs and
emotional state of a baby and decode potential threats to its health and
safety, said the researchers.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Grey matter is found in the
brain’s wrinkly outer layer called the cerebral cortex, which houses the processes
of learning and memory, motor function, social skills, language and problem
solving.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The good news: the researchers
“did not observe any changes in memory or other cognitive functions during the
pregnancies and therefore believe that the loss of grey matter does not imply
any cognitive defects,” said a UAB statement.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The study tested the women up to
two years after pregnancy, so it is not clear how long the changes last.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The study pointed to a process
called “synaptic pruning” which happens to humans in adolescence to remove
rarely-used synapses — connections between brain cells.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This is done to make way, after
childhood, for more efficient and specialised synapses and boost the network’s
overall efficiency.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div style="background: white; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 18pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">A similar process may be at play
in pregnancy, the researchers speculated.</span><span style="color: #3e3e3e;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">The proposed amendment to Italy's Civil Code would remove the word "fidelity" from Italian marriage contracts.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more" style="background-color: white;"></a><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;"> According to the senators who have signed the bill, the promise not to cheat is a "cultural legacy from an outdated and obsolete vision of marriage, family, and the rights and duties of spouses"</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">They cited a previous ruling from Italy's top court, which declared that judges could not legally place the blame for a marriage separation "on the mere failure to observe the duty of fidelity".</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">Instead, the other party has to prove that their spouse's infidelity led to the irreconcilable breakdown of the marriage.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">The bill which has now been passed to its Judiciary Committee, goes on to argue that there is an element of sexism in the current wording. <span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">"Until not long ago, only the fidelity of the woman was sufficient to guarantee the 'legitimacy' of children,  the bill notes, saying that since the "hateful" legal distinction between "legitimate" and "natural" children was scrapped in a 2012 ruling, there is no longer a need for the clause.</span></blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">The senators assert that fidelity should not be thought of only in sexual terms, but also in terms of "trust and respect", and that while it was an "important value", it should not be up to the State to impose it by law.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">  </span><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">References to fidelity and faithfulness were removed from Italy's civil unions bill which was passed earlier this year - a change which provoked outcry from some of the LGBT community, who saw this as a failure to acknowledge the parity of same-sex and opposite-sex romantic relationships.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">Instead, that bill simply refers to "moral and material support" and "cohabitation".</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">Laura Cantini, one of the senators arguing for the fidelity clause to be dropped from heterosexual marriage, said that the wording of the civil unions bill is "a much more advanced model".</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">  </span><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">According to a  2013 poll, 55 percent of men and one in three women in Italy admitted to cheating on their partners. </span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">Source: The Local Italy/LIB</span></span>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">READ the letter below, </span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">President Obama,</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">First of all, I would like to thank you for your friendship and for your outstanding service to our country. I’m particularly grateful for the concrete steps your administration has taken to provide opportunities to tens of millions of young people and families who have been impacted by mass incarceration.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Your administration took bold steps to end juvenile solitary confinement, reduce the use of federal private prisons and move to "ban the box" for federal employees. While we hope the Trump administration and the 115th Congress will maintain this progress and continue to work in a bipartisan manner to reform our criminal justice system, it is unclear what their priorities will be and when families can expect justice. Before you leave office, I would like to add my voice to the more than 2 million Americans who have asked you to use your clemency and pardon powers to bring justice to the thousands of families of non-violent drug offenders who have waited far too long for Congress to act.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In 2014, you set out to reinvigorate our country’s approach to clemency. Your actions to commute the sentences of 944 individuals, including 324 life sentences, is unprecedented in the modern era. Nonetheless, more action is needed to dismantle the unjust policies of the past 40 years. An estimated 36,000 non-violent drug offenders housed in federal prisons have sought relief under your clemency initiative and it is unclear how many of the remaining cases will be reviewed before you leave. As the Surgeon General noted, drug addiction is not a moral failing but a chronic health issue deserving of our compassion. What is a moral failing, however, is the War on Drugs and America’s addiction to incarceration which has not increased safety but needlessly torn families apart.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
</div>
<blockquote class="blockquote-1" style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.17647; margin: 1.31579em 0px;">
<span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">"I urge you ... to bring an end to the injustice that remains in our federal sentencing schemes."</span></span></blockquote>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I urge you to consider issuing categorical commutations to bring an end to the injustice that remains in our federal sentencing schemes. For example, approximately 5,000 individuals are serving sentences based on prejudiced laws which punished drug crimes involving crack cocaine more severely than crimes involving powder cocaine. Rectifying these crack-powder disparities would not only correct the mistakes of the past, but could save taxpayers just over $150 million per year and keep with public sentiment about the over-incarceration and criminalization of drug crimes.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Overwhelmingly, voters in red and blue states voted to end the country’s reliance on incarceration for drug crimes and other low-level offenses. California voters approved Prop 57, which expands parole and time off for good behavior for nonviolent offenses, and Oklahoma voters approved measures to reclassify certain property offenses and drug possession crimes from felonies to misdemeanors. Arkansas, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada and North Dakota made changes to their marijuana laws.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">At the birth of our nation, the Founding Fathers entrusted the clemency responsibility to the President. Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the Constitution of the United States provides: “The President ... shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.”</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 0.9em;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Just as George W. Bush urged you to proactively address clemency on your way to your first inauguration in 2009, I am asking you to bring justice to thousands of families by granting as many clemencies as possible before you leave office. </span></div>

<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="background-color: white;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">First of all, I wish all Muslims a happy and memorable celebration of the birth of the great Prophet, through whose teachings, particularly on peaceful living, tolerance, sobriety, generosity, sacrifice and honesty, and wisdom, the nation has gained immensely in building a harmonious and prosperous society. The universal truths of the Prophet's values remain unchanged. Against all odds, we have used these pillars of strength in securing a just and fair society, and our efforts are beginning to yield dividends in curbing terrorism, militancy, corruption and other crimes that devalue our humanity. As we use the memorable occasion of this celebration to reflect on our current challenges, I urge you not to lose faith in the ability of this administration to make a difference in the lives of our people. </span></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="background-color: white;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The reality of the temporary challenges should not undermine our hope, reverse our collective will to succeed, or divide us; rather it should remind us of why we need to stay together, fight together and succeed together. We all share a vision of a better Nigeria, and we will all share in the responsibility of building the country of our dreams. As we look forward to 2017 with hope and huge expectations, let me assure you that with collective dedication and hard work, we will overcome the mountain of economic difficulties, and return our country to the path of prosperity. </span></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="background-color: white;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The 2017 Budget proposals which I will lay before the National Assembly on Wednesday, will contain measures that we are confident will get the nation out of its economic woods. As we celebrate and reflect, I wish all Nigerians a peaceful Eid-el-Maulud.</span></blockquote>

What followed was a violent manifestation of the demonic spirit of cannibalism in the man after the man of God touched and prayed for him in the power of the Holy Spirit.
