In a bid to discover and promote sports activities at the
grassroots level, Kogi State governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has declared
readiness towards the commencement of all secondary schools sports competition
across the 21 local government areas of the state.
The state commissioner for sports and youth development,
Arome Adoji, disclosed this to newsmen in Lokoja, the state capital, while noting
that memo to that effect has been submitted to the State Executive Council
According to the commissioner, arrangements had been
concluded to start the Kogi State Grassroots Sports scout for talents that are
hidden in the state, while noting that the move was aimed at discovering young
stars and also to further develop talents in the state.
The commissioner added that some of the sporting events like the volleyball, basketball that was not located within the stadium would be moved to the complex to aid the development of such games.
He said moving the sporting activities that are presently scattered in the town into the stadium would not only develop such games, but also contribute to the economic development of the state.

Earlier, the commissioner praised the state athlete for their
commitment and patriotism at the just concluded National Youth Games in Ilorin,
Kwara State.
He noted that the state
was represented in 11 sports namely; Badminton, Boxing, Chess, Judo, Wrestling,
Weightlifting, Taekwondo, Ayo, Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Table Tennis and
Tennis with forty-four athletes”.
According to him, the
state came 17th on the overall medals table winning a total of ten medals made
up of two gold in Beach Volleyball and chess, three silver in Ayo and chess,
while five bronze in Chess, Ayo, Table Tennis and Tennis.
The
Commissioner further explained that Kogi is endowed with abundant talents that
can do the state proud in National and international Championships.
“I
observed that Kogi state indigenes constitute about thirty percent of the
athletes in all the states of the federation. I have therefore charged the
sports council to ensure that they bring back all Kogi athletes to the state as
there has been put in place an enabling environment for empowering and training
of athletes to stardom”.
