Chelsea has begun the
season in the worst possible way after a 3-2 defeat to Burnley over the weekend.
The Blues saw two red
cards in the game, making a comeback almost impossible. The referee’s decision
would be contested all week by Chelsea but Antonio Conte’s players did
themselves in.
Gary Cahill began the
list of talking points with a lunge on Burnley midfielder Steven Defour.
Referee Craig Pawson sent him off and Conte brought on Andreas Christensen for
Premier League debutant Jeremie Boga.
Shortly afterwards, the
Clarets had scored their first goal of the season through Sam Vokes with the
faintest of touches that evaded the outstretched arms of Thibaut Courtois.
The second goal came
out of nowhere as former Blues youngster Jack Cork hit an inviting free kick in
that met Stephen Ward’s header.
Conte stood and watched
as his side was torn apart by another Vokes goal shortly before halftime.
After halftime, Chelsea
threw all they could against the resilient Burnley. Alvaro Morata was
introduced on the hour mark and proved the inspiring difference from then on.
He scored his much
needed debut goal to give Chelsea fans some hope.
In between his first
Chelsea goal and his other telling contribution to the game, Cesc Fabregas was
also sent off for a second yellow card, after a late tackle.
David Luiz on the
scorer of Chelsea’s second goal and Morata was the man to register his name on
the assist sheet. The former Real Madrid forward flicked a ball over his head
into the path of Luiz who hit it hard and low past Heaton.
