The Spanish Super Cup first leg lived up to its billing on Sunday night and Real Madrid continued to show they are the dominant ream in Spain right now.
After a goalless first half, Gerard Pique’s own goal got
things moving in terms of the scoreline, on 50 minutes.
Leo Messi equalised from the penalty spot on 77 minutes. Only for substitute Cristiano Ronaldo to take over the next few minutes of the match.
Ronaldo scored a belting goal with ten minutes remaining, cutting inside and curling in a real beauty.
The Portuguese superstar celebrated in “Leo Messi style at the Bernabeu” by holding up his shirt to the crowd.
Then a minute later came the second booking, as Ronaldo was accused of diving under the challenge of Samuel Umtiti.
Referee Ricardo De Burgos sent Ronaldo off and the Portuguese superstar couldn’t believe it. In the aftermath of the red card, the Real Madrid superstar then clear pushes at the referee.
In the end it was only a small shove but it looks to have landed Ronaldo in seriously hot water.
In the aftermath of Ronaldo’s red card, there have been some reports that the Portuguese superstar would be banned for anything between 4 and 12 games.
On Monday afternoon, it has been confirmed that Ronaldo will be banned for 5 games.
Referee Ricardo De Burgos included the shove incident in his official match report, writing: “After the red card, the player pushed me slightly in a sign of disagreement.”
The red card, coming after two yellow cards, is worth a one game suspension.
The shove entails a four game suspension.
Whilst Ronaldo could have suffered a 12-game suspension for the push, the Spanish authorities always look to go for the lowest games possible.
Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo do have the possibility to appeal the 5-game suspension. This is almost certain and could well bring the games he misses down to four or three.
Pending appeal, Cristiano will miss Barcelona (h) in the Spanish Super Cup 2nd leg on Wednesday, Deportivo (a), Valencia (h), Levante (h) and Real Sociedad (a).
To add insult to injury, Ronaldo has also been fined 3,000 euros.
One angle on this seems particularly harsh. Luke Modric missed the first leg last night due to a red card picked up previously in a Spanish Super Cup match.
By those terms, Ronaldo should miss further Spanish Super Cup matches, rather than four La Liga games
