A father was arraigned in court on Wednesday for attempting to sell his 6-year-old son to raise money for his mother's burial.

30-year-old Haruna Sule was arrested together with a friend, Abdulfatai Quadri, 30, for conspiring to sell the little boy. They were both arraigned in Iyaganku Magistrate’s Court, Ibadan, where they pleaded not guilty to the charges read against them. 
The incident occurred on June 21 at Agbowo area of Ogbomoso. Vanguard reports that Haruna told the Police that his mother died and he was desperately looking for money to perform a befitting burial for her. He said he called his friend, Abdulfatai, to look for a buyer for his son, Saka Sule, in order to raise money for his mother’s burial. Abdulfatai eventually got a buyer and informed him. However, the would-be buyer informed the Police of the plan. 

Prosecutor, Sergeant Oriola James, noted that the offence committed by both men contravened Sections 516 and 509 of Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000. Chief Magistrate Taiwo Oladiran granted the accused N100,000 bail with two reliable sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to August 31 for further hearing.
