Female tailors bracing up for the challenge ahead
The President, Nigeria Union of Tailors, Mr Wasiu Taiwo, on Tuesday said that the union had concluded arrangement to set up a hub for mass production of clothes.
Taiwo told journalists in Lagos that the production hub would be a sewing centre with modern equipment.
According to him, some of the sophisticated equipment for the production hub are already being assembled in China and Italy and will soon be brought into Nigeria.
He said that the hub was also aimed at creating employment and training tailors in line with international standards.
“We have many tailors and want to train them in the use of modern equipment.
“There is nothing you can do to meet international standards without producing in large quantities,’’ Taiwo said.
The union leader said that countries such as Ghana, South Africa and Benin Republic had production hubs, each with a capacity to accommodate 5,000 or 6,000 workers.
According to him, human capacity development is critical to any meaningful development.
He called on the state governments to help to develop the capacities of tailors.
