Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (Madiba) was born on 18th July 1918 in Mvezo, Cape Province of South Africa to the Thembu Royal family. He studied law at the University of Fort Hare and the University of the Witwatersrand. He worked as a lawyer in Joannesburg before joining politics.
Madiba
became involved in anti-colonial and African Nationalist politics,
joining the African National Congress (ANC) and co-founding its youth
league in 1944. After the National party’s White-only government
established apartheid, he and his party committed themselves to
opposition activities which led to him serving 27years jail term from
1962 to 1990 in the Robben Island, Pollmoor and Victor Verster prisons.
He died on 5th December 2013 after suffering from a respiratory infection. He is regarded as the man after the heart of all Africans. 18th of July every year has since his death been set aside to celebrate his iconic life.
