A University of Lagos (UNILAG) student was left in shock on Monday when police allegedly attacked her while she was trying to enter the Akoka campus of the school.
UNILAG management had called police to campus as early as 12:40am to stop protesters from entering the school premises.
The female student, who will not be named for the sake of her own safety, stays off-campus.
“She was supposed to have a test this morning,” her flatmate, another UNILAG student, who shared the incident online later told Newsroom.
“Police blocked the entrance to the school and she was trying to rush in in order not to be late for the test. But a police officer manhandled her and hit her with the butt of his gun,” the student said.
Reports had said the girl was shot. But her flatmate said she wasn’t.
“They didn’t shoot her. But they hit her with a gun and she hasn’t been herself since,” she said.
“She’s in shock. She’s returned to her room and would have been unable to write the test if she had gone in after the incident. I don’t know if the test was cancelled.
“When she got back to the hostel (off-campus), she started shouting. She was shaken. I looked into her eyes and saw fear. I became afraid too.”
She told us she deleted her tweets about the incident for fear the police could come after her.
“I don’t want anybody to mention my our names. We are afraid.”
