A petition to stop U.S. President Donald Trump from making an official state visit to the United Kingdom reached over one million signatures on Monday.According to the U.K. Government and Parliament website, Parliament considers all petitions that gain over 100,000 signatures for debate. Reuters reports that after the petition hit one million signatures, Parliament scheduled a “three-hour emergency debate.”The petition reached roughly 1.4 million signatures on Monday, just days after Mr. Trump signed a controversial executive order suspending travel to the U.S. from seven Muslim-majority countries. The petition reads: “Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of US Government, but he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen.“Donald Trump’s well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales. Therefore during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official State Visit.”A British lawyer, Graham Guest, started the petition.“Maybe Trump’s travel ban has angered people and they want him to know what it’s like to be banned from a country,” he told CNN.London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn backed calls to cancel Mr. Trump’s planned visit to the U.K. in response to the travel ban. While Prime Minister Theresa May said she does not agree with Mr. Trump’s travel ban, she said she would not cancel his planned state visit.“To be clear, the prime minister extended an invitation on behalf of the Queen – and she was very happy to do so. The USA is one of this country’s closest allies, and we look forward to hosting the president this year,” a government spokesperson told Reuters.
