Chief (Dr.) Simon Akobundu Okeke has said that the Igbos are fast losing their sense of hard work and unity and blamed this on the Biafra civil war and the individual desire to be king.
According to the Authority, who reports that the former chairman of the Nigeria Police Service Commission noted that the title of Eze has become a source of disunity among Ndigbo as everyone clamours to rule.
Okeke noted that Aguiyi Ironsi banned the Igbo State Union and blamed this for the disunity among Igbo people.
When asked about the division of the Igbos and the Eze Igbo title in Lagos, he said:
“It is not only in Lagos, the division among Igbo leadership is not only in Lagos, it is everywhere. The Igbos were very highly united before the war, but today they are not, mostly because of the war which scattered things. The social system of Ndigbo was destroyed.
“In the past, the Igbos were known for their industry, honesty and group action based on onye aghana nwanneya. Igbos were respected because of their honesty and hard work and industry, their yes was yes and their no was no, but today, it is a different thing altogether.
“The Igbos had what was known as the Igbo State Union that held them together, but when the army made their first coup, in 1966, Igbo State Union was the first association that was banned by the man who took over government and that was JTU Aguiyi Ironsi and because of that the Igbos lost focus. That is why there is no unity in Igboland.”
