Not fewer than 15 persons have reportedly lost their lives in a road accident which occurred on the Owerri-Aba expressway on Friday.
The accident victims were said to be travelling from Owerri to Aba in an 18-seater bus which collided with a tanker.
The unfortunate incident reportedly happened very close to Shangrila Hotel in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State.
The driver of the bus, which belonged to Goodness and Mercy Motors Limited, was said to be over-speeding as he made an attempt to overtake the tanker. He crashed the bus into the tanker.
15 of the bus’ occupants died on the spot, witnesses say. Three others survived with grievous injuries and are currently in critical condition.
“That spot is a death trap and should be expanded,” an eyewitness, Chigozie Iheanacho is quoted as saying.
Iheanacho said it was “the fault of the bus driver.”
Another eyewitness, Christian Madu said, “It was a very fatal accident. Drivers should always drive with caution. Overspeeding and careless overtaking are not good.”
Rescue operations in the area by the Nigeria Police Force had begun.
