Chibok girls: We are all very embarrased and ashamed that over 200 girls could disappear like this- Cardinal Onaiyekan

<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop of Abuja, said the Nigerian government has to carry out negotiations sooner or later to secure the release of the Chibok girls. His remarks came in the wake of the release of a video by Boko Haram purportedly showing 15 of the kidnapped schoolgirls. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a><br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
The Archbishop who spoke to Susy Hodges on the second anniversary of the kidnapping of the Chibok girls on Thursday April14, said he believes the government needs "to go beyond a military response" to Boko Haram if they want to rescue these girls and the thousands of other innocent civilians who are being held by the Islamic group.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
He revealed that there is widespread embarrassment among Nigerians on this anniversary over the continuing failure to locate and rescue the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls despite a global media campaign.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
"We are all very embarrassed and very ashamed that over 200 girls could disappear like this."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
On the positive side, the Nigerian cardinal said he has learnt that many of the people displaced from their homes by the Boko Haram militants when they overran large swathes of territory in north eastern Nigeria a couple of years ago are now returning to their villages because of recent advances by the military against the Boko Haram. He said the Islamic militants are now largely “confined to the inner areas of the forest."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
Asked about whether the government is likely to open negotiations to secure the release of the Chibok schoolgirls and the hundreds of other civilians seized by the Boko Hara militants, Cardinal Onaiyekan said he firmly believes that a military campaign is not the sole means of solving this problem.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
“There have to be negotiations sooner or later. The government needs to go beyond a military response." Cardinal Onaiyekan said given the signs that many of the Boko Haram militants are now "tired" and losing their impetus and much of the territory they once controlled, they should be encouraged to hand in their arms and seek reconciliation. </div>

Low Savings: Okonjo-Iweala says she didn't indict the Jonathan administration

<div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has debunked reports attributed to her in regards to how lack of political will of Goodluck Jonathan's administration negatively affected the country's savings. Below is a statement issued <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1683463805" tabindex="0">on Friday</span> by her Media Adviser, Paul Nwabuikwu:</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
"Some recent media reports have distorted comments made by former Finance Minister Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala regarding how lack of political will negatively impacted national savings over the past few years.<br /><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a></blockquote>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
Contrary to the slant given by these loud headlines, Dr Okonjo-Iweala did not indict the Jonathan administration in which she served. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
Rather, she was referring to what many Nigerians already know: the strong opposition by some governors to the Jonathan government’s efforts to save in the Excess Crude Account and the Sovereign Wealth Fund sabotaged this important national priority.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
The governors’ criticism of Dr Okonjo-Iweala’s many calls for the country to save for the rainy day are still fresh in the minds of Nigerians.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
It will be recalled that this opposition culminated in the Governors taking the Jonathan government to the Supreme Court in furtherance of their position that the Federal Government had no right to “compel” them to save.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
Several knowledgeable persons including former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi have confirmed these facts.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
So the issue of Okonjo-Iweala indicting the Jonathan administration over this very public issue simply does not arise.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px;">
We urge the media to always consult for clarification whenever the need arises."</div>

Nigeria pirates kidnap Egyptian, Filipino

Pirates attacked a cargo vessel off the coast of Nigeria and
kidnapped two crew members, a maritime expert confirmed on Thursday, in
the latest high-seas strike in the Gulf of Guinea.<br />
The CMA CGM
Turquoise, managed by Dioryx Maritime in Greece, was stormed late on
Monday as it travelled between Nigeria’s commercial hub Lagos and Douala
 in Cameroon.<br />
It was the second attack in one day: early Monday
pirates kidnapped six crew members of a Turkish cargo ship, the M/T
Puli, according to the Nigerian Navy.<br />
“This attack – like most
others off the Niger Delta – was carried out at night and carried an
element of surprise,” Dirk Steffen, from the Denmark-based Risk
Intelligence firm, told AFP, referring to the later attack.<br />
“The
crew mustered in the citadel after the attackers had boarded the ship,
but two crew members – the Filipino 2nd officer and the Egyptian
electrician – did not make it there in time and were seized by the
attackers”, he said in an email.<br />
<br />
<br />
The Liberian-flagged vessel, chartered by French shipping company CMA
 CGM, was attacked at 20:56 (19:56 GMT), 28 nautical miles from the
coastline of the oil-rich Niger delta region.<br />
Steffen, the
director of maritime security at Risk Intelligence, said the target was
unusual and indicated the pirates were aiming at kidnapping rather than
hijacking tankers for their fuel cargo.<br />
The Gulf of Guinea is
increasingly becoming a piracy hotspot and Risk Intelligence has
recorded 32 offshore attacks for Nigeria alone this year.<br />
Steffen
linked the increase to the winding down of an amnesty scheme to former
Niger Delta militants, who demanded a fairer share of oil revenue
through kidnapping and sabotage in the 2000s.<br />
It also reflected a
trend of a decrease in abductions and offshore piracy in the region
around elections. Nigeria held presidential and parliamentary polls last
 year.<br />

Reps ask FG to set target for Chibok girls’ rescue

The House of Representatives on Thursday asked the Federal Government
 to set a target for security agencies to rescue the 219 Chibok school
girls held in captivity two years after they were abducted by Boko Haram
 insurgents.<br />
The girls were abducted on April 14, 2014.<br />
The
Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, gave the position of the House after an
exhaustive debate on a motion to mark the second anniversary of the
abduction of the girls.<br />
The House resolved to send a “high-powered
 delegation” to Chibok to commiserate with the parents and relatives of
the girls as a way of passing the message that the legislature shared in
 their pains.<br />
The motion on the “Need to Intensify the Search and
Rescue of the Chibok School Girls”, was moved by the All Progressives
Congress member, representing Damboa/Chibok Federal Constituency of
Borno State, Mrs. Asabe Bashir.<br />
Dogara stated that searching for
the girls had reached a point where government must set a target on when
 to rescue the girls to underscore the urgency of the situation.<br />
“A time has come for us as an institution, to insist that the executive should set targets for the rescue of the girls.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We have to set targets so that we don’t lose the sense of urgency that is required to free the girls”, Dogara added.<br />
He
 particularly commended members of the Bring Back Our Girls’ campaigners
 for keeping the fate of the girls on the front burner.<br />
“We must
also comment the security forces of our country, who have been toiling
day and night, searching for these girls,” he said.<br /> While moving her
 motion in an emotion-laden voice, Bahir said a dark cloud had enveloped
 the world of the parents of the girls, two years on, without a word of
assurance on how they would re-connect with their loved ones.<br />
“The plea is that the federal government should intensify the search for these girls.<br />
“For two years, their whereabouts are unknown ,” she reminded the House.<br />
The
 Chairman, House Committee on Foreign Relations, Nnena Ukeje, condemned
the cowardly acts of the Boko Haram insurgents, whom she said employed
unconventional methods of fighting to attack soft targets.

Chibok girls: Senate summons NSA, other security chiefs

The Senate Thursday resolved to invite the National Security Adviser
(NSA), Babagana Monguno, and other security chiefs to brief it on their
efforts to secure the release of the Chibok school girls.<br />
The
upper chamber also commended the Bring Back Our Girls group for their
doggedness in the campaign for the release of the Chibok girls.<br />
It asked security agencies to do everything humanly possible to ensure that release of the girls.<br />
The
 resolutions followed the adoption of a motion by Senator Dino Melaye
(Kogi West) and three others entitled “Abduction of Chibok school
girls-two years after.”<br />
The motion elicited angry reactions from
Senators who felt that two years was long enough for the government to
have recovered the school girls.<br />
Senator Melaye lamented the plight of the girls and their parents.<br />
He insisted that the Federal Government cannot be said to have succeeded until the girls are rescued.<br />
He
 said: “We cannot succeed as a government until those girls are
released. Getting back the over 200 Chibok school girls into the society
 is important and a must for our security agencies.<br />
“The abduction
 of over 200 girls by Boko Haram has wrongly affected us as a people as
could be seen in the international condemnation of the government’s slow
 reaction to this unprecedented outrage committed against Nigerian
womanhood. Never before has such criminal viciousness been perpetrated
on Nigerian womanhood.”<br />
Melaye noted that Thursday “makes it 730
days, 17520 hours and 1,051 minutes that our Chibok school girls have
been under captivity. It will be recalled the night of 14-15 April,
2014, 276 girls were kidnapped from Government Secondary School, Chibok,
 Borno State, the responsibility for the abduction was claimed by Boko
Haram. Luckily, 57 of the school girls managed to escape making 219
still missing.”<br />
He said that outside propaganda videos created by the Islamist
militant group, none of the girls has been seen and the families of the
missing girls have been traumatized because of their daughters.<br />
Senate
 Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, in his contribution said that Melaye
 and some other members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) used the
abduction of the Chibok school girls to win last year’s general
elections.<br />
Akpabio wondered why those who led protests against the
 government of former President Goodluck Jonathan to rescue the girls
have suddenly kept mum.<br />
He said, “I remember in 2014, Dino Melaye
used to wear T-shirt and he led the protest to ensure that the abducted
school girls were released.<br />
“He was always at the National
Fountain to lead a protest against the government. He eventually cashed
in on it and won election to the Senate. Other people in APC also did
the same thing.”<br />
Former President Jonathan came under local and
international attack over the way and manner the government handled the
issue of the abducted school girls.<br />
Jonathan was accused of playing politics with the rescue of the girls.<br />
At
 last year’s general elections, President Muhammadu Buhari who was the
presidential candidate of APC, promised to rescue the girls two months
into his government.<br />
The government has insisted that it does not know the whereabouts of the girls and when they will be rescued.<br />
Some
 other Senators, who also supported the motion, asked the federal
government to go beyond the yearly ritual of celebrating the anniversary
 of the abduction of the girls.<br />
The lawmakers said the government should explore every available avenue to ensure that the girls are rescued.<br />

The Abandoned Ojukwu’s Aircraft Seized By Nigerian Government Since 1969 (Photos)

<div class="narrow">
This is the historic aircraft with registration number
 5N-AER used by OJUKWU during his active period for the emancipation of
the Republic of Biafra.</div>
Aircraft name is Hawker Siddeley 125 (HS-125). A presidential aircraft as at the time active.<br />

Even though the Aircraft was flown into the Nigerian College of
Aviation Technology, Zaria in serviceable working condition and parked.
It is now a SCRAP used for training of Pilots/Aircraft Engineers and
viewing for school children who come for excursion. The Aircraft is
parked in front of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering School Hangar.<br />

I guess the interior might still be clean since it has not been
opened for years but the flown in serviceable aircraft is now looking
tattered possibly because it’s not being maintained.<br />

Don’t you think Nigerian government should allocate a maintenance
vote to this historic aircraft or at worst preserve it in the museum as
artifact for growing young Nigerians to know that the Biafra/civil war
that took the lives of millions is real?<br />

 described the allegations as “sweeping”, adding that the NBA was at the
 forefront in the fight against corruption and was ready to sanction any
 lawyer who ran foul of acceptable legal principles.<br />
“The allegations are very unspecific; we maintain at all times that lawyers do not frustrate proceedings.<br />
“A person who is accused of an offence has the right to legal representation; both the victim and the defence have such right.<br />
“When a counsel is briefed, he needs adequate time to sit with his client, who often times, is not granted bail, to discuss.<br />
“You do not expect the lawyer to visit his client in prison where such client needs to show documents.<br />
“Fundamentally,
 in order for there to be a trial according to due process of law, then
both the accused and the victim require a defence; counsel must have
access to his client.<br />
“Representation by counsel is not just a
figure of speech; counsel must be in a position to defend his client,
and this cannot be described as an attempt to distort prosecution.<br />
“For instance where an accused is charged and remanded in custody, how does the lawyer get access to him?<br />
“The
 NBA has a zero-tolerance for corruption, and so, any lawyer who takes
any step capable of impeding the course of justice faces sanction from
the NBA.<br />
Alegeh also stressed the need to refer cases bordering on
 allegations of indiscipline on the part of lawyers first to the NBA
before charging such lawyers to court.<br />
He described the neglect of the role of the NBA as an attempt to “cow” its functions.<br />

Is it wrong for Gov. Ambode to stop for traffic light? Here's what Ayo Shonaiya thinks

On April 12th, Gov Ambode's convoy waited for the green light at Wempco
junction, Agidingbi. The photo was shared by the Governor's chief press
secretary, Habib Aruna on Facebook. Many people praised the governor for
 doing this but there are those who feel it was a huge security risk.
Read what Ayo Shonaiya wrote about it after the cut...<br />

 just saw a picture posted by Habib Aruna on Facebook, of Lagos State
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and his convoy STOPPED at a traffic light in
Lagos. My question is WHY?!<br /> <br />
 The Governor of Lagos State doesn't have to stop at traffic lights when
 he's on official duty with his convoy should he? And in terms of his
security, this is very unadvisable. I have seen Go<span class="text_exposed_show">v
 Ambode's convoy, and it's like 8 vehicles, including an Ambulance! As
they are allowed to cut through traffic jams, they should be allowed to
cut through red lights. What are they stopping for? To prove that he
obeys the Law just like every other normal citizen? But no, he's not
just any other normal citizen when he's on duty, he's the Governor!<br /> <br />
 I have seen comments about this picture, some are saying "kudos" and
"humble governor", Nooooo! He is the Governor and shouldn't be stopping
on plain road and even dangerously at intersections just to prove that
he is not above the Law. He is making himself a sitting duck to
potential harm by doing this. Who is the Head of Ambode's security
detail that sees this as a good thing, for your charge to be static for 2
 minutes on plain road while waiting for traffic lights to change. Wow!<br /> <br />
 The fact that the convoy will be braking and stopping at Red Lights at
every intersection is even dangerous. The vehicles in the convoy could
quite possibly crash into each other and cause a pile up. What if the
first 2 or 3 vehicles go past the green light, and the light turns red
"mid convoy"? Would they now break convoy? <br /> <br /> I do not like this.
 It is not breaking the Law if the Governor of Lagos State goes through
Red Lights with his convoy on official duty. Maybe when he's going
somewhere in his personal car and without convoy, then he can maybe do
that, but really even so, he should have some security detail with him.
Stopping at red lights on official duty is not being humble, it creates a
 security risk. I don't want my Governor to be humble, I want my
Governor to PERFORM as he has been doing for a year now since he resumed
 office.<br /> <br /> Governor Ambode, you are excused, and I don't mind
your convoy going through red lights to be getting your work done as
you've been doing. Don't stop. Keep Lagos moving.<br /> <br /> This has been a Public Service Announcement by Ayo Shonaiya. If you agree or disagree with me, let me know your thoughts.</span></span></span><br />

Two fanged creatures believed to be evil captured and killed by villagers in Kazakstan (Photos

Some villagers in Kazakhstan claimed to have tracked down two
bloodsucking creatures called 'chupacabra', a legendary creature which
 preys on livestock. They believe that the creatures had been targeting
and slaughtering their local farm animals so they had to be killed.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4442204860816360768" name="more"></a>The video footage and photos of he slaughtered
animals have sparked outrage online as there is an argument over the
true identity of the animals. Some people saying they are mere cats
while others are convinced they are evil, pointing out their huge fangs.<br />
<br />
Those who are convinced the creatures are evil point say they have been
killing cattle, sheep, and chickens by sucking out all of their blood<br />
<br />
The photos and accompanying footage have been widely shared after being
posted on a Kazakh news site.  People in the video appear to speak a
Chinese dialect, so local media believe it was filmed by Dungan people
 - Muslims of Chinese origin - on the border between Kazakhstan and
China. <br />
<br />
One local forum user called Baty said: <br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"These creatures have been killing chickens and sheep. They don't eat the flesh but just suck out all of the blood."</blockquote>
Another called Ant agreed, saying: <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"These creatures are not cats and they are slaughtering cattle at night, they are not interested in meat, only in blood."</blockquote>
But one user, simply called N, said: <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"These are decomposed bodies that belonged to cats, they swelled up like this because they were in water for a long time."</blockquote>
The chupacabra, which literally means "goat-sucker", is from the
folklore of parts of the Americas, with the first purported sightings
reported in Puerto Rico. <br />
The name comes from the animal's reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock especially goats. <br />
<br />
Physical descriptions of the creature vary. It is said to be a heavy
creature, the size of a small bear, with huge teeth and a row of
spines down its back. <br />
<br />
Eyewitness sightings have been reported as far north as Maine, in the US, and as far south as Chile in South America. <br />
<br />
They have also been reported sightings outside the Americas in countries including Russia and the Philippines.<br />
